FY 2024: K-12 Opioid Prevention Education

The Texas Opioid Abatement Fund Council (OAFC) K-12 Opioid Prevention Education Program aims to reduce opioid misuse among K-12 students through statewide, evidence-based prevention and awareness initiatives. Managed by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts (CPA), the program allocates up to $25 million, divided into regional healthcare partnership allocations and targeted funding for underserved counties with populations under 100,000. Applications are due by November 1, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. CT. Eligible applicants include Texas-based political subdivisions and nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations, with activities covering prevention education, needs assessment, tailored interventions for at-risk students, and public awareness initiatives. Required activities also include the development of educational materials compliant with Texas school health standards, and community engagement efforts like town halls and social media campaigns to increase awareness of opioid risks and prevention strategies. Funding supports only evidence-based, non-fear-based educational materials, excluding new curriculum development. Administrative costs are capped at 10% of the grant award, and recipients must maintain a comprehensive financial management system and regular performance reporting. Evaluation criteria focus on organizational capacity, past experience, cost-effectiveness, and the scope of proposed opioid prevention strategies.
