Frankenthaler Climate Initiative – Implementation Grants
This grant provides funding for nonprofit visual arts organizations in the U.S. to implement significant climate action projects, such as renewable energy installations and energy-efficient upgrades, to reduce their environmental impact.
The Implementation Grants under the Frankenthaler Climate Initiative (FCI) represent the most advanced and competitive funding tier offered by the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation. Designed for nonprofit visual arts institutions that are ready to undertake transformative climate action, these grants provide up to $100,000 in support of major infrastructure upgrades, clean energy projects, and institutional transitions away from fossil fuels. Since 2021, FCI has committed to accelerating sustainability in the visual arts sector, making this funding stream a critical enabler for long-term environmental impact. Implementation Grants are intended to support ambitious and high-impact projects that require coordination across departments, external collaborators, and technical consultants. Eligible projects include the installation of renewable energy systems, large-scale HVAC overhauls, building envelope upgrades, energy-efficient lighting systems, and the adoption of building automation or management systems. Preference is given to organizations that are transitioning to electrification as part of their climate strategy. Projects must begin between June 1 and August 31, 2026 and be completed by December 31, 2028. While a financial match is not required, applicants are encouraged to demonstrate internal investment or external funding sources, especially for capital campaign alignment. The application process includes two steps: a required draft submission due February 27, 2026, and a final application due March 27, 2026. Applications must be submitted through the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation’s grant portal and include a detailed proposal, energy usage reporting, budget, and design documentation. Projects related to new construction may instead submit modeled savings estimates in place of historical energy data. Applicants must be U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit institutions whose primary mission and operations focus on the visual arts. This includes art museums, nonprofit galleries, artist-endowed foundations, and arts departments within universities. Use of the EnergyStar Portfolio Manager is required to track energy consumption and outcomes. Reporting expectations include a mid-point narrative (if the project duration exceeds six months), a project completion report, and a 12-month post-completion update that includes updated energy performance metrics. The Implementation Grant category is structured to support projects that not only reduce environmental impact but also serve as visible and scalable models for the broader cultural sector. As the most comprehensive offering in the FCI portfolio, these grants empower institutions to fully operationalize their climate commitments and shift their facilities and practices toward a low-carbon future.
