Safety Grant
This program provides financial support to Florida municipalities for purchasing safety equipment and improving workplace safety to reduce risks in their operations.
The Florida Municipal Insurance Trust (FMIT) Safety Grant Fund Program is designed to support the safety and health efforts of its insured members. The FMIT, administered by the Florida League of Cities, offers this grant to help eliminate, reduce, or control exposures to loss within municipal operations. The program reimburses 50% of eligible expenses, such as safety equipment purchases, with the intent of promoting workplace safety and mitigating risk. To be eligible, an applicant must be a participating member in FMIT’s Workers’ Compensation Insurance Program and/or Property/Liability Insurance Program for the current policy year. Applications for the Safety Grant are submitted online through the FMIT Member Dashboard. The submission process includes uploading invoices or receipts, and optionally, ACH proof of payment to the vendor. Importantly, all purchases or invoices must be dated within the fiscal year in which the application is submitted. The program excludes costs related to FMIT-provided classroom training, such as Temporary Traffic Control, unless a third-party provider is used. Applicants must assign a designated Safety Grant Coordinator who will serve as the primary point of contact and whose electronic signature, along with that of the Insurance Decision Maker, is required. The amount awarded varies depending on the member’s annual premium and coverage type. Award tiers are clearly defined: for example, entities with premiums under $25,000 may receive up to $500 for one line of coverage and up to $1,000 for two lines. Awards are capped annually based on these premium ranges. Multiple departments within a municipality may submit applications, but the total reimbursement per entity must not exceed the designated cap. FMIT processes Safety Grant applications on a quarterly cycle, with deadlines set at the end of each quarter—December 31, March 31, June 30, and September 30. Applications submitted by each quarter’s end are reviewed in the following weeks, typically with decisions communicated within 2–4 weeks. In the final quarter (July to September), only members that will continue participation in FMIT in the upcoming policy year are eligible to receive funds. Applications not received by the end of the fourth quarter will not be considered for that year. Contact with FMIT is centralized through designated Risk and Safety Consultants, as well as Insurance Member Services staff. Support contacts include Christina Malhotra and Anita Wick, with additional consultants available for direct member assistance. Questions about eligibility or appropriate purchases can be directed to these contacts. Overall, the FMIT Safety Grant Program offers a streamlined and accessible way for municipal entities to enhance their safety practices and infrastructure. Through clear guidelines, structured award tiers, and quarterly review cycles, FMIT ensures transparency and encourages proactive risk management among its insured members.
