Grant Description

The PEN America U.S. Writers Aid Initiative provides grants to U.S.-based writers facing financial hardship due to emergency situations. Part of the PEN America Writers Emergency Fund, this program supports fiction and nonfiction authors, poets, playwrights, translators, and journalists by addressing short-term financial needs. Grants are distributed quarterly, and while the fund is limited, decisions are based on professional credentials and the applicant’s demonstrated need. Eligible applicants must be professional writers with evidence of their work, such as published books (excluding self-published or vanity-press works), multiple recent contributions to literary journals or anthologies, professionally produced plays, or consistent freelance or staff journalism. Forthcoming contracted works are also considered. Applicants must show that the grant will significantly aid in managing a financial emergency. Writers currently enrolled in degree-granting programs are ineligible, as are those seeking funds for writing-related expenses like travel, residencies, or promotional efforts. Deadlines for applications in 2025 are January 10, April 1, July 1, and October 1. Decisions are reviewed by a volunteer committee of literary peers in consultation with PEN America staff. Writers do not need to be PEN America members to apply, but recipients will receive a complimentary one-year membership. The initiative is funded by donations from an anonymous donor, PEN America members, and other supporters. For questions, applicants can contact writersfund@pen.org. This program underscores PEN America’s commitment to supporting the literary community during times of crisis.
