Grant Description

The 2025 General Operating Support Grant for Humanities Organizations is offered by HumanitiesDC to strengthen the humanities ecosystem in Washington, DC. HumanitiesDC, established in 1980 and supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, serves as the DC state humanities council and is committed to making the humanities accessible to all. Through its various grant programs and public initiatives, HumanitiesDC uplifts voices and stories that shape the cultural identity of the city. This grant provides unrestricted funds of up to $25,000 to eligible DC-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations whose mission and activities are centered on the humanities. Unlike project-based grants, this opportunity offers general operating support to help organizations sustain their ongoing work. Eligible uses for the funds include salaries, rent, utilities, consulting fees, administrative expenses, IT costs, and the creation of operating reserves. However, the grant prohibits the use of funds for food, entertainment, tuition, debt reduction, fundraising, or government sub-awards. Applicant organizations must have an annual budget of $2 million or less and be physically located in the District of Columbia. They must be officially registered as either a domestic or foreign entity with DC authorities and maintain compliance with several local and federal regulatory bodies. Fiscal sponsorships are not permitted. Additionally, organizations must not be receiving a General Operating Support grant from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities in the same fiscal year. The core mission must demonstrate a commitment to humanities disciplines such as history, literature, ethics, linguistics, and similar fields. Applications were due by 5:59 PM on May 1, 2025. The grant period begins July 1, 2025, and ends April 30, 2026, during which all awarded funds must be used. The evaluation process prioritizes two main criteria: the applicant’s organizational profile and programming (50%), and its community outreach, access, and inclusion efforts (50%). Reviewers assess applications for clarity of mission, program impact, inclusivity, and leadership representation. Selected awardees are typically notified approximately eight weeks after the deadline, and funds are disbursed via direct deposit once the grant agreement is signed. Grantees are required to submit both interim and final reports through the HumanitiesDC grants portal. The interim report is due by November 30, 2025, and must include a spending update and project status. The final report is due by May 30, 2026, documenting all expenses and activities completed. Failure to meet these reporting requirements could jeopardize eligibility for future funding opportunities.
