Watertown Area United Way Grant
This funding opportunity supports local nonprofit organizations and government programs in the Watertown, South Dakota area that provide essential services in education, health, financial stability, and community resilience.
The Watertown Area United Way provides funding through its annual Allocations process to support local programs aligned with its mission to enhance education, health, financial stability, and community resilience. Established in 1970, the organization has a longstanding commitment to serving the Watertown, South Dakota region and surrounding communities by partnering with agencies that demonstrate responsible governance and impactful service delivery. This funding initiative aims to invest in ongoing services that address essential human needs and contribute to a stronger, more vibrant community. Eligible applicants include a range of public and nonprofit entities. Organizations must either be incorporated 501(c)(3) nonprofits, county or city programs partnered with a 501(c)(3), or direct city/county programs. Applicants must provide specific documentation depending on their classification, such as IRS determination letters, Memoranda of Understanding, governance explanations, and organizational charts. All applying organizations must have operated in Watertown or South Dakota for at least one full year before seeking funding. In addition, each organization must be governed by a responsible volunteer board that exercises effective administrative control and meets regularly. The funding supports ongoing programs and expenses, not one-time projects or individual assistance. Priority is given to programs that serve the broadest population in areas such as health, education, financial stability, safety, social services, youth recreation, and other major community needs. Organizations are also required to participate in campaign activities by volunteering as Loaned Executives or Business Division volunteers. Additionally, they must comply with a strict Black Out Policy prohibiting fundraising during the United Way’s annual campaign period from September 1 to October 31. Violation of this policy may result in suspension or revocation of funding. The 2026 application opens on March 1, 2026, and closes at 5:00 PM on April 15, 2026. Applicants must submit their proposals through the online portal, which requires account creation or login. Required submission materials include a Letter of Intent, a list of board members, financial documentation, success stories, and relevant photos. Incomplete or late submissions will not be considered. Following submission, applicants are required to attend a 15-minute Allocation Interview, typically scheduled on Wednesday mornings or Thursday afternoons. At least one representative must be present to provide a program overview and respond to questions from the Allocations Committee. Award decisions are made by the Watertown Area United Way Board of Directors, with notification letters sent in June 2026. Fund disbursement for approved programs begins in January 2027. Reimbursement-based funding will be processed monthly upon receipt of invoices. The funding amounts may be adjusted depending on the success of the annual Fall/Winter campaign, which runs from August 2026 to early 2027. Programs selected for funding must also publicly acknowledge United Way support through signage, marketing materials, and social media engagement, at the agency’s own expense. Overall, the Allocation process is structured to ensure transparency, accountability, and strategic impact in addressing community challenges. It emphasizes collaboration and community visibility while ensuring that only committed and well-governed agencies receive funding. Prospective applicants are encouraged to review the full application checklist and presentation template provided by Watertown Area United Way and reach out to the office at [email protected] or 605-886-5815 with any questions or concerns.
