Grant Description

The Staff Sergeant Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program (SSG Fox SPGP) is a federally funded initiative administered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), specifically under the Office of Suicide Prevention. This program was established in accordance with Section 201 of the Commander John Scott Hannon Mental Health Improvement Act and is designed to extend VA’s suicide prevention efforts beyond traditional clinical settings. The program targets veterans and certain active-duty service members who are at risk of suicide but may not be currently engaged in VA health care. The SSG Fox SPGP funds community-based organizations to provide or coordinate the delivery of primarily non-clinical suicide prevention services tailored to the needs of eligible individuals and their families. The primary goal of the SSG Fox SPGP is to reduce suicide risk among eligible veterans and service members through comprehensive, individualized support. Funded services must focus on social determinants of health such as mental well-being, financial stability, housing, and social connectedness. Grant-funded activities may include peer support services, case management, suicide risk screenings, emergency clinical treatment, assistance in obtaining VA and public benefits, and referrals for services like childcare, transportation, and temporary income support. All services must be individualized through a baseline mental health screening and the development of a service plan. Approximately $111.9 million is available under this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for Fiscal Year 2027, with individual awards ranging from $100,000 to $750,000 annually. The grant period begins September 30, 2026, and lasts for one year. Applications are categorized into two priorities: Priority 1 for renewals from existing grantees with satisfactory performance, and Priority 2 for new applicants. If funding remains after all eligible Priority 1 applications are awarded, funds will be distributed to Priority 2 applicants based on a competitive review process. Eligible applicants include private nonprofit organizations, wholly owned nonprofit-controlled corporations, Indian tribes (including Alaska Natives), state and local governments, and qualifying community-based organizations. Applicants must register in SAM.gov, obtain a Unique Entity Identifier (UEI), and submit a VA-FSC Vendor File Request through the Customer Engagement Portal. Initial applications also require a completed budget template, organizational chart, resumes, hiring criteria, and entity verification documentation. The application window opens April 6, 2026, and closes at 4:59 p.m. Eastern Time on June 12, 2026. Applications must be submitted electronically through the VA’s dedicated SSG Fox SPGP application portal and cannot be mailed or faxed. Late or incomplete submissions will not be considered. There are no requirements for matching or cost sharing. Applicants will be scored on qualifications, program concept and service plan, evaluation plans, financial capability, and community partnerships. The expected notification of award is in Q4 FY2026. For assistance, applicants may contact Ms. Sandra Foley, Program Director, at [email protected] or (202) 502–0002. Additional guidance, including templates and technical assistance, is available on the official program site: https://www.mentalhealth.va.gov/ssgfox-grants/. This grant program is expected to recur, aligning with the VA's 10-year National Strategy for Preventing Veteran Suicide and supporting Executive Order 14296 for veteran care excellence.
