Grant Description

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) annually recognizes the state's top exporters in food, agriculture, and forest products through the Michigan Ag Exporter of the Year Award. As the lead agency in promoting rural and agricultural economic growth within the state, MDARD emphasizes the importance of international trade in supporting local businesses, job creation, and economic development. This award is part of MDARD's broader strategy to support Michigan producers and exporters who contribute to the state's agricultural prominence. The award aims to celebrate a Michigan company that has made significant strides in export development by expanding into new international markets and increasing the volume and scope of its exports. Through this recognition, MDARD seeks not only to acknowledge success but to provide a platform that helps elevate the recipient's global reputation. Winning companies receive statewide and international recognition throughout the award year, including promotional opportunities such as media interviews and participation in trade-related seminars. Eligible applicants include Michigan-based producers, manufacturers, and shippers of food, agricultural, or forest products, provided that their products are composed of at least 50 percent Michigan-grown, processed, or manufactured inputs. Companies with headquarters outside Michigan but with production operations in the state are also eligible. Prior recipients may reapply after a five-year period if they have demonstrably grown their export activity or entered new foreign markets. MDARD prioritizes companies with a solid reputation in the business community that are actively engaged in international commerce. The application process is designed to be accessible yet thorough. Applicants must complete a company profile form and provide a written narrative (limited to two pages) addressing specific topics: exported products, target markets, market entry strategies, regulatory navigation, branding, strategic partnerships, and any relevant supporting information. Letters of recommendation are welcome but not mandatory. All applications must be submitted via email to [email protected]. For 2026, the application period opens on February 1 and closes on March 31 at 5:00 PM Eastern Time. Evaluation criteria include export growth, innovation, and success in penetrating new international markets. Selected applicants will receive follow-up communication, and the awarded company will be announced and celebrated via MDARD's public communication channels. Questions regarding the award or the application process should be directed to Holly Gaffney at 517-449-8482 or via email at [email protected]. While this is an annual program, past winners must wait five years before becoming eligible again. There is no formal pre-application stage, and the program does not operate on a rolling basis. Interested applicants are encouraged to subscribe to the Ag Development bulletin to receive updates and announcements about award recipients and future cycles.
