Aflatoxin Research Grant
This grant provides funding for researchers and collaborators to develop innovative solutions for preventing and mitigating aflatoxin contamination in corn, benefiting growers across the United States.
The Aflatoxin Mitigation Center of Excellence (AMCOE), under the management of the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA), has opened its competitive grants program for a new cycle of research funding aimed at combating aflatoxin issues that significantly impact corn growers across the United States. AMCOE is a collaborative initiative originally formed by a consortium of southern state corn checkoff boards to unify research efforts targeting aflatoxin contamination. Through the structure provided by NCGA, the program has attracted funding from a variety of public and private sources to support regional solutions with national implications. NCGA's oversight helps expand the reach and effectiveness of the program, positioning AMCOE as a significant driver of agricultural research in this field. The 2026 grants cycle places particular emphasis on three core research areas: the development of methodologies and technologies to prevent or defend against aflatoxin presence; in-field mitigation strategies; and post-harvest treatment options. These priority areas reflect the ongoing challenges faced by corn growers, especially in the southern U.S., but the scope of the grant extends to any corn-growing region experiencing crop stress-related mycotoxin issues. Research proposals are not geographically restricted and are encouraged from across the U.S., emphasizing the nationwide relevance of the issue. Eligible applicants include principal investigators, co-principal investigators, and collaborators who can submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) detailing their proposed research project. The LOI must be submitted to AMCOE no later than Monday, December 1, 2025, and the funding request may not exceed $100,000 per year. Proposals should clearly align with one of the three defined priority areas to be considered for funding. Evaluation criteria, program eligibility, and further details about the application process are available through AMCOE's official channels. The competitive grant program is designed to foster innovative, scientifically grounded approaches that address pressing industry challenges. With a focus on measurable outcomes and broad applicability, funded projects are expected to equip farmers with tools to reduce aflatoxin-related losses and improve overall grain quality and safety. As part of a broader strategic vision, AMCOE plans to evolve into the Mycotoxin Center of Excellence (MCOE), expanding the focus to include other harmful compounds like vomitoxin and incorporating additional stakeholders across more states and sectors. Applicants and collaborators are encouraged to coordinate with AMCOE early in the proposal process, especially if considering state-based supplemental funding. The AMCOE committee is committed to supporting a rigorous review and evaluation process to ensure the highest quality of selected research. Questions related to the grant process may be directed to Sarah McKay, Director of Research & Market Development at NCGA, via the official program email, amcoe@ncga.com. AMCOE continues to support the agricultural research communityโs effort to mitigate aflatoxin risks, thereby safeguarding the nationโs corn supply and maintaining consumer confidence in its safety and quality.
