The Northeast Kingdom Fund is a permanent charitable fund managed by the Vermont Community Foundation, aimed at supporting the residents of Caledonia, Essex, and Orleans counties in Vermont. Created in 2011 in partnership with local stakeholders, the fund reflects a belief in the resilience and community spirit of the region. Its purpose is to encourage local philanthropy, foster community-led initiatives, and provide funding to improve the quality of life for Kingdom residents.
The fund provides annual grants for projects that arise from or directly respond to community needs. Emphasizing a grassroots approach, the initiative prioritizes proposals from local nonprofits, schools, and municipal entities within the Northeast Kingdom. It aims to back small-scale, high-impact initiatives, although more established organizations may also be considered. All projects must demonstrate local leadership and a direct benefit to residents within the specified counties.
Grants of up to $5,000 are available for the 2025 cycle, with applications open from June 3 to July 15, 2025. The grant activities must occur between September 2025 and September 2026. The fund is not open to capital campaigns, regular operating costs, deficit coverage, or reimbursement of previously incurred expenses.
Applications must be submitted through the Vermont Community Foundation’s portal before 5 PM on July 15. The grant is not awarded on a rolling basis but is a recurring opportunity offered annually. Notifications of decisions are expected by late September 2025 and will be sent via email used during application submission.
Eligibility is limited to nonprofits, schools, and municipal governments located in Caledonia, Essex, or Orleans counties. The fund requires that projects be locally driven and have a clear benefit to the Northeast Kingdom community.
