The mission of the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) Arizona Biomedical Research Centre (ABRC) is to identify and support innovative biomedical research to improve the health of all Arizonans. ABRC is focused on leveraging existing resources, maximizing partnerships, cultivating communication, and promoting innovation. ABRC manages multiple initiatives which are guided by input from leaders and professionals from Arizona’s universities, nonprofit research institutions, hospitals, medical centers, and patient advocacy groups. Financial Notes: Funding Source: The funding source for this Grant is the Health Research Fund (Tobacco Tax) as established by Arizona Revised Statute (ARS) §36-275 (https://www.azleg.gov/ars/36/00275.htm) and §36-773 (https://www.azleg.gov/ars/36/00773.htm). Up to $3,500,000 per year is available for Arizona Investigator Grant (AZ IG) and New Investigator Award (NIA) applications. The maximum award for AZ IG Applications is $225,000.00 annually with a maximum project duration of three (3) years from the award date. The maximum award for NIA Applications is $75,000.00 annually with a maximum project duration of three (3) years from the award date.

Additional Requirements
Any individual(s) with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to carry out the proposed research as the Program Director(s)/Principal Investigator (PI)(s) is eligible to apply for this Grant as either an AZ IG or NIA. The PI shall reside in Arizona. The lead institution shall originate in Arizona. An AZ IG Applicant shall hold an independent research position at a domestic United States (U.S.) institution. For the purpose of this RFGA, “independent research position” means a position that automatically confers eligibility by the Applicant’s institutional policy for an investigator to apply for National Institutes of Health (NIH) R01 grants, with an appropriate commitment of facilities to be used for the conduct of the proposed research. NIH Research Project Grant Program (R01) | grants.nih.gov. An NIA shall be an individual who has graduated with their terminal degree within ten (10) years of the LOI Due Date; or an individual who is mid-career but is shifting their research to a new field; or an individual who is re-entering the research field after a five (5) or more year break. Current ABRC Grant Recipients may apply for either the AZ IG or NIA as long as the Eligibility criteria are met.
