Grant Description

The Science of Science: Discovery, Communication and Impact (SoS:DCI) program is offered by the National Science Foundation (NSF), a federal agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering. This program builds upon the former Science of Science and Innovation Policy (SciSIP) initiative, aiming to develop theoretical and empirical understanding in the social science of science. It is designed to deepen insight into the mechanisms of scientific discovery, enhance scientific communication, and demonstrate the public value of science in policymaking. The program welcomes interdisciplinary research that applies rigorous empirical methods to investigate the social and structural dynamics of scientific work. Applicants are encouraged to explore the development of models, data, and analytical tools that not only refine current practices but also enable transformative shifts in how science is studied and communicated. A significant emphasis is placed on projects that examine science at individual, organizational, institutional, and systemic levels, incorporating micro to macro scale analyses. SoS:DCI particularly seeks proposals that foster open science through robust data management practices and increase the accessibility of reliable scientific data to the public. Projects should demonstrate a clear theoretical framework, articulate their contribution to advancing the science of science, and provide credible assessments of potential societal and policy impacts. Additionally, research that contributes to strengthening the United States’ leadership in global science and enhances national competitiveness is especially valued. The program supports various types of proposals, including standard research grants, collaborative research, conference grants, and specialized opportunities such as the SoS:BIO initiative, which focuses on innovating the biomedical research enterprise. The program is also integrated into NSF's cross-directorate funding efforts. Eligibility is inclusive, though priority is given to early-career researchers and those from historically underrepresented groups and regions in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Proposals must adhere to the NSF Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide (PAPPG) relevant to the due date, and they must be submitted through Research.gov or Grants.gov. Applications are due annually, with the next target dates on September 9, 2025, and February 10, 2026. Program contacts include Dr. Thomas S. Woodson, Program Director, reachable at tswoodso@nsf.gov or (703) 292-8760. Additional resources such as FAQs and related programs are available through the NSF website. Past events include a series of informational office hours conducted throughout 2024 and early 2025.
