Grant Description

The Fund for Mitchell County is administered by The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina and is designed to enhance the quality of life in Mitchell County, North Carolina. The Fund encourages charitable giving and provides financial support for projects that demonstrate a strong community benefit. As part of the Foundation’s broader philanthropic efforts, this fund seeks to uplift residents by addressing local needs through strategic and targeted grantmaking. Grants of up to $5,000 are awarded to support charitable purposes within Mitchell County. Applicants are encouraged to propose initiatives that deliver high impact and clear benefits to the broader community. Funding is not available for certain activities, including annual campaigns, endowments, debt retirement, sectarian or partisan efforts, and private school projects that exclusively benefit their own students or staff. Proposals must show alignment with the fund's mission and articulate the projected community benefits. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofits, religious, educational, and governmental entities operating in or serving Mitchell County. Fiscal sponsors are allowed but must submit only one application annually. Furthermore, applicants must have submitted end-of-grant reports for any prior funding received through this Fund. Organizations intending to benefit third parties—such as school-based projects—must include a letter of endorsement from those entities. Applications are due by 5:00 p.m. ET on February 1 each year. If that date falls on a weekend or holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day. Grant funds are typically distributed by the end of March, and expenditures should generally be completed within ten months of the award. The application process is managed via an online portal, and applicants are encouraged to review updated tutorials before submission. Applications are screened by Foundation staff for completeness and compliance, and evaluated by The Fund for Mitchell County’s advisory committee. Factors such as alignment with priorities, fund availability, organizational capacity, and community benefit are considered. Applicants receive an email confirming receipt of submissions. Reporting on outcomes and expenditures is mandatory and must be completed via the Foundation’s online system, per instructions provided in the award letter. For guidance on eligibility or proposal preparation, applicants can contact Jeremy Lett, Program Officer, via email or phone. Technical issues with the grant portal may be directed to Diane Crisp, Senior Grants Manager. More information about past grant recipients and the application portal can be found on the Community Foundation’s website.
