Grant Description

The Main Street Fort Smith Mini-Grant Program provides matching grants to eligible property and business owners in downtown Fort Smith, Arkansas, to support improvements that preserve the area’s historical and architectural character. Administered by Main Street Fort Smith, a nonprofit organization focused on revitalizing the historic commercial district, the program is funded through support from Main Street Arkansas and the Arkansas Department of Heritage. The grant initiative emphasizes projects aligned with Main Street Fort Smith’s mission: historic preservation, economic vitality, and community impact. Eligible improvements include high-visibility enhancements like exterior paint, lighting, awnings, masonry repair, and signage. Projects must comply with the City of Fort Smith’s form-based codes to ensure consistency with the downtown area's long-term vision and architectural standards. Grant awards range from $1,500 to $7,500 and require a 50/50 match, which can be fulfilled through cash or documented in-kind contributions. This is a reimbursement-based program, and funds are disbursed within 30 days of completed project documentation. Individual grants are determined based on the project’s visual and economic impact, feasibility, and alignment with preservation goals. Projects must be completed and fully documented by April 15, 2026, with possible extensions up to May 15, 2026, upon written request and approval. Eligible applicants must be business or property owners located within the Main Street Fort Smith district. Projects initiated prior to approval or without required permits will be disqualified. All applications must include an itemized budget, design materials, proof of ownership or lease with owner consent, required permitting documentation, a completed IRS W-9, and incorporation documents if applicable. The application period opens on October 1, 2025, and closes at 5:00 p.m. on November 14, 2025. All applications must be submitted via email to Amanda Hager, Executive Director of Main Street Fort Smith. Grant award decisions will be announced no later than December 15, 2025. Projects are reviewed by a selection committee with final approval from Main Street Arkansas consultants.
