Grant Description

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellows program, administered by the National Academy of Medicine, supports midcareer professionals by providing a comprehensive, immersive experience in health policy at the federal level. With funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), the program is designed to develop health policy leaders who are equipped to influence the policymaking process in ways that advance health equity and public wellbeing. RWJF’s broader mission is to ensure health is not a privilege but a right, and this fellowship aligns with that vision by placing fellows directly in congressional or executive branch offices in Washington, D.C. The fellowship spans 12 to 24 months and offers a stipend of $175,000. It aims to build capacity in health policy by engaging professionals such as health practitioners, behavioral and social scientists, and others whose work relates to public health determinants like housing, education, and employment. During their assignments, fellows engage in policymaking activities including developing legislative proposals, briefing officials, and organizing hearings. This hands-on experience is designed to enhance leadership and influence in health-related policy. The program specifically targets U.S. citizens or permanent residents who hold advanced degrees and have substantial experience in a health-related field. Eligibility extends to professionals from academic institutions, nonprofits, and government (excluding certain government relations roles). The program encourages diverse perspectives and seeks applicants with a long-term commitment to health policy, ideally continuing in the field for at least a decade post-fellowship. Applicants must submit a preliminary application by November 3, 2025, and three reference letters by October 31, 2025. Finalists will be notified in January 2026, with full applications due in February and interviews in March. The fellowship officially begins on September 1, 2026. Optional informational webinars are available throughout fall 2025, and prospective applicants are encouraged to consult the full application documentation available online. Eligible expenses under the program include relocation and housing costs, which are reimbursed separately within specified limits. The use of funds and allowable costs are detailed further in the official Call for Applications. RWJF enforces conflict-of-interest rules, excluding individuals related to its trustees or founder from eligibility. For inquiries, applicants can contact the program via email at [email protected] or by phone at (202) 334-1506. This fellowship recurs annually, providing ongoing opportunities for professionals to engage with and shape the nation's health policy landscape.
