Inclusive History Grant Program
This funding initiative supports nonprofit organizations and government entities in Maryland that are dedicated to researching and sharing the diverse and inclusive histories of the state, particularly those narratives that highlight the experiences of under-represented communities.
The MD Two Fifty Inclusive History Grant Program is a funding initiative led by the MD Two Fifty Commission, Maryland’s official representative body for the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026. This program is designed to engage organizations that are committed to researching and sharing the diverse and inclusive histories of Maryland’s past. The grant supports efforts that highlight under-represented narratives related to Marylanders’ pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness before, during, and after the American Revolution. Through this initiative, the commission aims to ensure that all Marylanders see themselves represented in the state’s historical storytelling during this significant commemorative period. The grant program seeks to fund inclusive, community-centered activities such as research, events, educational programs, exhibitions, and interpretive projects. These initiatives should invite widespread participation, encourage critical reflection on the development of American democracy, and showcase the vital role Maryland and its residents have played in the shaping of the United States. Projects are encouraged to explore the complex dimensions of the state’s history, especially those that honor the legacy of both free and enslaved African Americans and acknowledge the contributions and resilience of Maryland’s Indigenous peoples and communities. Eligible applicants for this grant include 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations in good standing with the Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation, as well as state, county, municipal, and tribal entities that are legally authorized to carry out obligations under the grant. Applicants must ensure their organizations are qualified to do business in Maryland and demonstrate the capacity to execute the proposed projects. The program supports a wide array of activities including archival research, oral histories, development of historical markers or interpretive signage, production of symposia or public programs, and creation of educational materials or exhibitions. Grant funds may not be used for capital projects, archaeological investigations, general operating support, or any efforts unrelated to Maryland history. Additionally, projects that lack a public-facing outcome or were completed prior to the grant award are ineligible. The maximum award for any project is $4,000. Funding decisions are made by an independent selection committee comprising members of the MD Two Fifty Commission. Projects are evaluated based on their focus on inclusive storytelling, alignment with the goals of the 250th commemoration, educational and community value, long-term legacy potential, and the organization’s ability to reach diverse audiences and successfully manage the project. Applications for the 2025 funding cycle opened on June 18, 2025, and will close on July 25, 2025. The application process is fully online and can be accessed through the MD Two Fifty Commission’s website. Once awarded, grantees are required to complete their projects within one year of receiving the grant. Additionally, all materials and publicity must include acknowledgment of the MD Two Fifty Commission’s support and display the official logo. Upon completion, recipients must submit a summary of their work, including at least two photos or other documentation, through the online supplemental materials section provided by the commission. Prospective applicants are encouraged to attend virtual office hours, which will be announced on the commission’s website and social media channels. For further inquiries, applicants can contact Erin Bode via email at Erin.Bode@Maryland.gov. This grant program offers a timely opportunity to help ensure that Maryland’s commemoration of the nation’s semiquincentennial is inclusive, reflective, and resonant with all communities across the state.
