Grant Description

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) invites applications for the "Cellular and Molecular Biology of Complex Brain Disorders" (R01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) program. This funding opportunity supports research on the biology of high-confidence risk factors for complex brain disorders, emphasizing intracellular, transcellular, and circuit-level mechanisms underlying neural function. The program focuses on understanding multifactorial contributions to brain disorders, whether polygenic, environmental, or functionally distributed. Eligible applicants include state and local governments, higher education institutions, nonprofits, tribal entities, small businesses, and other organizations. Cost-sharing is not required. The next application deadline is January 8, 2025, with additional cycles open until September 7, 2026. Research may utilize in vivo, in situ, or in vitro paradigms, including model organisms or human cell-based assays. Projects should avoid modeling entire disorders and instead target the neurobiological effects of specific risk factors and their interaction within biological processes. Outcomes are expected to contribute to common data resources (e.g., Gene Ontology, FAIR Data Informatics) to bridge the gap between risk factors, biological mechanisms, and potential therapeutic targets.
