Montana Healthcare Foundation Grants

The Montana Healthcare Foundation (MTHF) has announced its 2025 Call for Proposals, inviting Montana-based organizations to apply for funding to develop and test innovative solutions tailored to address pressing health challenges within the state. Through this annual grant program, the Foundation aims to encourage community-driven strategies to improve health outcomes while simultaneously gaining insight into the evolving health needs of Montana’s communities. Organizations interested in applying must carefully review the eligibility and selection criteria to ensure their proposed projects align with the Foundation’s objectives. Eligible projects must directly address a critical health issue and demonstrate the applicant’s capacity to design or implement effective programming. Strong applications will highlight the importance of the targeted health issue, the effectiveness of the proposed program, meaningful collaboration with relevant partners, and a viable sustainability plan that extends beyond the initial grant period. The Montana Healthcare Foundation also encourages all applicants to view its 2025 Call for Proposals webinar and review its application questions to ensure a thorough and compliant submission. The grant program provides funding amounts ranging from $10,000 to $50,000 for one-year projects and up to $100,000 for two-year projects. Planning projects, which are focused on strategic, business, or sustainability planning, can receive up to $50,000. Implementation projects, for those with strong existing plans, may receive up to $100,000, although these larger grants are highly competitive. In addition, MTHF plans to open a separate Rural Call for Proposals in March 2025, specifically for smaller rural Montana organizations. These rural grants will provide up to $10,000 through a simplified application process, with applications accepted on a rolling basis until September 1. The 2025 Call for Proposals opens on January 15, 2025, with applications due by March 14, 2025. Funding decisions will be announced by May 20, 2025, and awarded projects will begin on June 1, 2025. Each eligible organization may submit up to three different applications per year. The review and decision process generally adheres to this published timeline, although applicants will be notified if any changes occur. Only Montana-based organizations are eligible to apply. This includes Montana-registered tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organizations (excluding private foundations and some supporting organizations), tax-exempt educational institutions, and state, tribal, or local government agencies. While applicants may include consultants who do not meet these criteria in their project budgets, the lead applicant organization must be fully eligible. Applicants are encouraged to review MTHF’s detailed selection criteria and guidelines, including a clear understanding of what the Foundation does not fund. Excluded items include capital campaigns, construction projects (unless invited), large equipment purchases, political or lobbying activities, and programs intended to replace existing government-funded services.
