Inclusive History Grant

The MD Two Fifty Commission's Inclusive History Grant Program is designed to support projects that explore underrepresented narratives of Maryland's history as part of the lead-up to the United States' 250th anniversary in 2026. The program aims to fund research, events, programs, and exhibits that reflect the diverse stories of Marylanders, particularly those focusing on the struggle for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness before, during, and after the American Revolution. The program encourages projects that help deepen public understanding of Maryland’s complex history and invite broad participation from all Marylanders. Eligible applicants for this grant include non-profit organizations and local or state government entities that are in good standing with the Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation (SDAT) and are legally qualified to do business in the state. Funded projects can include archival research, oral histories, the installation of historic markers or interpretive signage, the production of conferences or educational materials, and the creation of public exhibits. The focus is on projects that broaden the understanding of Maryland's history, including the legacy of both free and enslaved African Americans, and the persistence and contributions of Maryland’s Indigenous peoples. However, certain activities are ineligible for funding under this program. These include capital projects, archaeological investigations, operating support for organizations, projects unrelated to Maryland history, or any work completed before the grant is awarded. The program also does not support fiction, poetry, or oral history recordings without accompanying transcripts that are accessible to the public. Applicants may request up to $4,000 for their projects. The grant application process opens on September 16, 2024, and closes on December 6, 2024. Award notifications will be sent by February 2025, although applicants will be informed of any delays. Applications are evaluated by an independent selection committee based on several factors, including the project's ability to expand understanding of Maryland’s diverse history, its educational value, its ability to engage diverse audiences, and the applicant’s capability and readiness to complete the project. It is recommended that applicants contact the MD Two Fifty Commission staff to discuss their proposed projects before applying to ensure eligibility. The application is available online at the Commission’s website. Once awarded, grantees are required to complete several tasks, including submitting an acceptance form, a W9, and completing the project within one year of the award date. Additionally, all publicity materials related to the project must credit the MD Two Fifty Commission for funding. Grantees are also required to display the Commission’s signage at the project site or organizational headquarters and provide a brief project report with documentation upon completion.
