Nurse Preceptorship Grant
This program provides financial reimbursement to licensed nurses who mentor nursing students during their clinical education, helping to address the shortage of preceptorship sites in Washington State.
The Washington State Student Nurse Preceptorship Grant (WSSNPG) is administered by the Washington State Board of Nursing and provides monetary reimbursement to licensed nurses who serve as preceptors for student nurses during their clinical education. This program aims to address the critical need for more preceptorship sites and to expand the state’s healthcare workforce by incentivizing registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and advanced registered nurse practitioners to mentor students. The funding is part of a legislative initiative in Washington to alleviate the shortage of clinical placements and ensure that nursing students receive practical, hands-on experience in approved healthcare environments across the state. To qualify for this reimbursement grant, a nurse must actively hold a valid license and possess a minimum of one year of clinical or practice experience. Preceptors must volunteer through their employer and work at an approved healthcare site affiliated with a recognized nursing education program in Washington State. Nurses must complete at least 80 hours of qualifying clinical instruction per student, and can precept up to two students per term. Only final-term RN and LPN pre-licensure students and ARNP students in any clinical term are eligible. RN-to-BSN programs, refresher courses, and out-of-state education programs are ineligible for participation. Preceptors are eligible for a one-time reimbursement per student precepted, with funding typically ranging from $500 to $1,000, depending on the cycle. For the Fall 2025 cycle, preceptors will receive a fixed reimbursement of $1,000. The application must be submitted no later than January 9, 2026. Documentation includes a completed Preceptor Hours Reporting Form submitted online by the nurse and a Verification of Hours Form submitted separately by the nursing program’s dean or director. All required materials must be received by the deadline to qualify. Prior to applying, nurses are advised to confirm with their employer whether accepting this reimbursement complies with workplace policies and applicable ethics laws, especially for government employees at the local, state, or federal level. The grant payment requires registration with the Statewide Vendor Number (SVN) system administered by the Office of Financial Management. Preceptors must register for a personal SVN using the vendor/payee form and can also enroll in direct deposit to expedite payment. The SVN registration does not expire but must be updated every two years. Reimbursement cycles are seasonal, with the Fall cycle covering clinical instruction from September 1 to December 31, and all documentation due by January 9. Additional cycles occur in Winter (Jan–Mar), Spring (Apr–Jun), and Summer (Jul–Aug), each with corresponding deadlines. Submissions from previous cycles are not accepted. Informational sessions are available via Zoom in October, November, and December to provide support on the application and verification processes. Grant inquiries can be directed to the Washington State Board of Nursing Preceptor Team. Specific contacts include Victoria L. Hayward, MSN, RN, CNOR (564-669-1016) and Kaknika Pisith, Grant Specialist (564-669-4870). General inquiries may also be sent to WABONPreceptorship@doh.wa.gov. Additional training materials and preceptor resources are available online to guide applicants through the process and to enhance the quality of student preceptorships.
