Nurse Preceptorship Grant
This program provides financial incentives to licensed nurses in Washington State who mentor nursing students in clinical settings, helping to address the shortage of training opportunities for future nurses.
The Washington State Student Nurse Preceptorship Grant (WSSNPG) is administered by the Washington State Board of Nursing (WABON) to support the clinical education of nursing students through qualified preceptors. This grant offers monetary incentives to licensed nurses who volunteer their time and clinical expertise to guide nursing students in approved healthcare settings. The initiative responds to growing shortages in clinical training sites and aims to strengthen the pipeline of new nurses into Washington State’s healthcare workforce. This program is available to Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, and Licensed Practical Nurses who meet specific professional requirements. These include holding an active license, having at least one year of clinical experience, and working in an approved practice site in collaboration with a nursing education program. The preceptor must volunteer with their employer to support student instruction and complete a minimum of 80 clinical instruction hours per student. Each preceptor may supervise up to two students per academic term. Eligibility for reimbursement requires that clinical hours occur in the final term for RN and LPN students and within any clinical cycle for ARNP students. Clinical instruction must be affiliated with an in-state nursing program. Programs like RN-BSN and refresher courses are ineligible. For the Winter 2026 cycle, eligible preceptors may receive a $1,000 one-time reimbursement per student. The reimbursement is contingent upon meeting all requirements and submitting the appropriate documentation by the firm deadline of April 10, 2026. Applications for previous cycles are not accepted, and incomplete or late submissions are ineligible. The application process requires preceptors to register for a Statewide Vendor Number (SWV) through the Office of Financial Management (OFM), using their personal information. Business registrations are not accepted. Registration is valid indefinitely but must be updated every two years. Direct deposit enrollment is encouraged to ensure timely and secure payment processing. To apply, preceptors must submit the Preceptor Hours Reporting Form before the cycle deadline. The affiliated nursing program is responsible for submitting the Preceptorship Verification of Hours Form. Once both forms are received, it may take up to 10 weeks for reimbursement to be processed. A confirmation email will be sent upon successful submission of the application. If confirmation is not received within five minutes, applicants are encouraged to contact the Preceptor Team. Informational Zoom sessions are held monthly to answer questions and provide updates about the program and submission process. The grant program follows a recurring cycle, with specific deadlines for each academic season. For the Winter cycle, preceptorships must end between January 1 and March 31, with all documentation submitted by April 10. The program does not accommodate out-of-state education programs, regardless of the location of clinical instruction. The grant is considered taxable income, and recipients will receive a 1099-NEC form for tax reporting. Contact information for the program includes Grant Specialist Kaknika Pisith and Victoria L. Hayward, MSN, RN, CNOR, with email support at [email protected] and phone numbers listed for further assistance. Through the WSSNPG, Washington aims to expand the capacity of its nursing education infrastructure by incentivizing experienced nurses to participate in preceptorship. This program serves both as a workforce development tool and as a response to the clinical placement challenges facing nursing education institutions across the state.
