Grant Description

The Philanthropic Impact Fund (PIF) at Vanguard Charitable is a mission-oriented funding initiative focused on bolstering the nonprofit and philanthropic ecosystem. With an emphasis on sector-wide impact, PIF supports organizations that either serve donors directly by fostering more informed and effective philanthropy, or contribute to strengthening nonprofit capacity and infrastructure. Vanguard Charitable emphasizes the importance of long-term sustainability, equity, and resilience in the nonprofit sector, recognizing that many critical support systems—such as leadership development, governance, technology, and fundraising infrastructure—are persistently underfunded. PIF invites organizations that align with its goals to submit a Letter of Interest (LOI). If the LOI is approved, applicants are invited to submit a full proposal. The LOI for the current cycle is due by December 8, 2025, and invited full proposals are due February 23, 2026. Award decisions are finalized by early July, and selected applicants will be notified at that time. Applicants are advised that only one submission per organization will be reviewed per grant cycle. Organizations that have not been directly invited may still apply via LOI submission. Grant awards typically range from $50,000 to $100,000, although requests for larger or multi-year grants are considered if well justified by the proposed project's scope and budget. The typical performance period is one year, but extensions for multi-year support may be granted. Funding must align with one of PIF's three strategic focus areas: Integrating AI and digital equity, Donor Education and everyday giving, and Narrative Strategy to elevate the nonprofit sector’s public perception. These areas were identified through research and input from the field to ensure relevance and responsiveness to current sector challenges. Vanguard Charitable seeks to support scalable initiatives with broad sector reach. This includes national nonprofits with partner networks, nonprofit infrastructure organizations, and philanthropy-serving entities. The fund prioritizes projects that elevate systemic capacity rather than direct service delivery, aiming for structural improvements that enhance the overall effectiveness and reach of nonprofit organizations and the philanthropic sector. Organizations must demonstrate how their mission or project aligns with one of the fund's focus areas. Projects with a national or multi-organizational footprint, that strengthen donor engagement or nonprofit resilience, are particularly encouraged. Full proposals require a detailed budget and explanation of the intended use of funds. While LOIs initiate the application process, final proposals are assessed based on alignment with focus areas, budget rationale, and anticipated impact. All applications must be submitted through the official LOI form, accessible on the funder's platform. Selected applicants will receive proposal invitations in early January. No updates will be provided on application status prior to July notification, and multiple submissions from the same organization will result in disqualification of all but the first received application.
