The Nelson County Community Fund (NCCF), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization governed by an all-volunteer board, supports projects that address unmet needs and enhance the quality of life for residents in Nelson County. Since its inception in 2020, NCCF has awarded approximately 350 small grants, totaling nearly $2.3 million, to a wide range of initiatives. These grants support diverse areas such as education, scholarships, healthcare, hunger, childcare, disabilities, and housing improvements.
NCCF funds are directed exclusively toward tax-exempt public charities under Section 501(c)(3) and to government agencies, focusing solely on initiatives based in Nelson County. The foundation does not discriminate based on gender, race, religion, national origin, or sexual orientation. Projects must demonstrate significant community impact and creativity, and preference is given to collaborative efforts that address overlooked needs within the county.
Funding categories include, but are not limited to, human services, education, environmental projects, health initiatives, and broader community development. NCCF considers both seed funding for innovative new programs and sustaining support for essential services. However, it generally does not support endowments, construction, deficit reduction, fundraising events, religious programs, or any initiative typically under government directive.
Applications are accepted twice annually, with deadlines on June 30 and December 31. Grant decisions follow in August/September and February/March, respectively. Applications must include a completed Grant Proposal Cover Sheet, a narrative limited to three pages, a financial statement, proof of nonprofit status, and various other supporting documents. All application materials must be submitted electronically in one complete package.
Grant applications undergo a review by the NCCF Board of Directors and may involve a site visit. The Board ultimately makes all funding decisions. If awarded a grant, the recipient must use the funds as intended and report on their use within one year or with any subsequent grant request. This includes documenting the number of people served and the nature of services delivered.
All proposals should be emailed to nccfund@gmail.com. The organization encourages applicants to include letters of endorsement and requires a follow-up report to assess the effectiveness of the funded project. Organizations that have not submitted required reports for past grants will not be eligible for new funding until compliance is achieved.
