2025 Knight Emerging City Champions Fellowship Program
This program provides funding and support to young civic innovators in select U.S. cities to develop creative projects that improve public spaces and engage their communities.
The Knight Emerging City Champions (KECC) Fellowship and Microgrant Program, a collaboration between 8 80 Cities and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, is now accepting applications for its 2025-2026 cycle. This initiative aims to empower young civic innovators, ages 18 to 35, with a passion for transforming their communities through creative public space and civic engagement projects. The program is targeted at residents from eight U.S. cities—Akron, OH; Charlotte, NC; Detroit, MI; Macon, GA; Miami, FL; Philadelphia, PA; San Jose, CA; and St. Paul, MN. The KECC program offers selected fellows $5,000 in seed funding and an additional $500 technology grant to implement their projects. In addition to financial support, fellows will receive virtual training, technical assistance from 8 80 Cities, and access to a national network of urban innovators. The program runs from August 2025 to August 2026 and includes an initial in-person studio in Toronto, Canada, featuring presentations, workshops, and city tours led by community advocates and city leaders. Since its inception in 2015, KECC has supported over 130 civic projects that enhance public spaces and community connections. Projects have included initiatives like urban beehives, mentorship programs, and gamified tools for public engagement. This eighth cohort continues that legacy, seeking proposals that build local trust, foster creativity, and enhance community resilience. Applications must be submitted through the program website at www.emergingcitychampions.org by May 28, 2025, at 11:59 pm EDT (8:59 pm PDT). Eligible applicants must reside in one of the eight listed Knight cities and be within the specified age range. Twenty fellows will be selected for the upcoming cycle. Applicants are evaluated on their innovative ideas, potential community impact, and leadership capabilities. The application includes a project proposal submission, and while no specific application questions are listed, applicants are encouraged to be thorough and thoughtful in presenting their ideas. For further inquiries, applicants may contact Amanda O’Rourke, Executive Director at 8 80 Cities, via email at aorourke@880cities.org or phone at 647-800-5226. Additional support is available at KECCSupport@880cities.org. Interested individuals are also encouraged to review the program’s FAQ and blog for more information and application guidance.
