Grant Description

The Maine Semiquincentennial Commission, supported by the Maine State Archives and the Maine State Cultural Affairs Council, has launched a special grant program in anticipation of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This initiative aims to help communities, organizations, and institutions across Maine commemorate this milestone by supporting inclusive, community-centered research and programming that brings Maine’s diverse historical contributions into focus. The funding is part of a broader effort to ensure that Maine’s commemorative efforts are both meaningful and reflective of its unique legacy and identity within the American narrative. The program invites applications from a range of eligible entities, including museums, heritage organizations, educational nonprofits, local and tribal governments, and state agencies, provided they are based in Maine. Projects must align with the Commission’s guiding principles: fostering shared heritage and community (Connect), illuminating Maine’s role in national history (Share), and promoting lifelong learning about the state’s place in America's story (Learn). The grant encourages interdisciplinary and collaborative work that contributes to both public understanding and civic engagement. Examples of eligible activities include archival and oral history research, interpretive signage and historic markers, classroom programs and field trips, adult education offerings such as lectures and workshops, exhibitions, digitization of collections, preservation efforts, living history events, and volunteer-driven community service projects. Projects must deepen the understanding of Maine’s complex historical narrative and demonstrate clear educational or cultural value. Grant awards are capped at $10,000 per project, with no match or cost-sharing requirement. Funds must be used during the official grant period and cannot be applied retroactively. Staff salaries for existing personnel are not eligible, though funds can be used to compensate volunteers or staff for work conducted outside of regular hours. Fiscal sponsorship is not permitted for this program, and partial awards will not be made. All applications are due by October 31, 2025, with notifications expected by December 15, 2025. Approved projects may begin as early as January 1, 2026, and must conclude by December 31, 2026. Applicants may submit more than one proposal, and concurrent projects are permitted. Submissions must be emailed to Sarah Hansen, Director of the Maine Semiquincentennial Commission, with the subject line “ME250 Grant Application.” A final report summarizing expenses, outcomes, and public impact (with images encouraged) is due within 30 days of project completion, and no later than January 30, 2027. Applications will be reviewed based on the quality and clarity of the project description, alignment with guiding principles, strength of collaboration, geographic reach, potential legacy, and the feasibility of the proposed budget.
