Greenup County Green Fund Grant
This funding opportunity supports projects that improve and preserve the natural environment in Greenup County, Kentucky, through physical enhancements and educational initiatives.
The Greenup County Green Fund, established in 1999, honors the memory of Owen and Doris Pillans and seeks to enhance the natural environment and its quality within Greenup County, Kentucky. It is managed through the Foundation for the Tri-State Community and funded by the 21st Century Endowment Fund. The Fund supports projects that directly improve the physical environment and promotes educational or research initiatives that align with its environmental mission. This grant program underscores the funder's longstanding commitment to sustainability and community-based environmental stewardship in the tri-state area. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charities and other organizations meeting the Foundation's charitable guidelines. Funded projects must serve residents of Boyd and Greenup Counties in Kentucky, Cabell and Wayne Counties in West Virginia, and Lawrence County, Ohio. Only one application per organization per cycle is allowed. Prior recipients must wait at least 12 months—and ideally 18 months—before reapplying. Grants are not intended to support operational costs or projects initiated prior to funding approval. The Fund awards grants ranging from $500 to $5,000. Proposals are reviewed quarterly by a Grant Advisory Committee, with final decisions made by the Board of Trustees. Application deadlines fall on January 10, April 10, July 10, and October 10 annually. If the 10th lands on a weekend, the deadline rolls to the following Monday. Grant awards are announced the month after each deadline, and funds are made available in the next quarter. Applications must demonstrate alignment with one or more of the Fund’s core objectives, including improving quality of life, testing innovative community solutions, strengthening nonprofit institutions, enhancing resource coordination, supporting regulatory compliance, or expanding successful programs. Projects that begin before funding decisions are finalized will not be considered. There are specific funding restrictions. The Fund generally does not support general operating expenses (e.g., salaries or utilities), fundraising events, capital building projects, endowment contributions, individual schools, operational deficits, individuals, political activities, or sectarian religious programs. Awarded organizations must publicly acknowledge the Foundation’s support in their outreach materials and credit it in any related publications or listings of contributors. The Foundation encourages early engagement with staff to improve application success. While no formal pre-application process is required, applicants are urged to consult with Foundation representatives to ensure eligibility and strengthen proposal alignment with Fund objectives.
