Green Business Grant Program
This funding initiative provides financial support to independently owned commercial businesses in Wheat Ridge for implementing environmentally sustainable improvements that reduce their ecological footprint.
The Green Business Grant Program is a sustainability-focused funding initiative managed by the City of Wheat Ridge in partnership with Sustainable Wheat Ridge, a volunteer resident advisory committee. This program provides financial support to commercial businesses located within the city that are seeking to implement environmentally sustainable improvements. The funding is designed to encourage and incentivize business owners to adopt practices that conserve resources and reduce their environmental impact. This grant program offers up to $1,000 in matching reimbursement funds for eligible sustainability projects. Funding is made available on a rolling basis each year, and applications are accepted until the annual funding pool is exhausted. Applicants are required to pay for the entire project cost upfront, and only then will they be reimbursed for 50% of eligible expenditures, up to the $1,000 maximum. Eligible project types include energy efficiency upgrades (such as high-efficiency HVAC systems), water conservation improvements (such as low-flow toilets or xeriscaping), and waste reduction initiatives (like recycling or composting programs). Behavior-change campaigns that promote sustainable practices, such as discounts for customers using reusable containers, are also eligible. To qualify, applicants must be independently owned, for-profit businesses operating in commercially or industrially zoned properties within Wheat Ridge. Home-based businesses and franchises are explicitly excluded. Tenants may apply with permission from the property owner. Businesses must also hold a current business license with the City of Wheat Ridge and be in good standing with respect to city and county taxes, fees, and licensing. Additionally, applicants must be registered with the Colorado Green Business Network. A completed application includes business and contact information, project description, projected sustainability impacts, estimated total cost, requested grant amount, and a proposed budget file. Applicants must also specify anticipated project start and completion dates. If approved, recipients must sign a binding Letter of Commitment and submit a W-9 and ACH form to receive reimbursement. Documentation of purchase and proof of project completion is required within 30 days of project finalization. Projects must be completed within four months of grant approval unless an extension is requested from the City. All projects must comply with applicable city codes and permitting requirements. Grant recipients authorize the city to use project photos and descriptions for promotional purposes. Questions about the program or application process can be directed to the City of Wheat Ridge via email at sustainability@ci.wheatridge.co.us or by calling 303-235-2841. The application remains open annually until all available funds have been distributed.
