Green Business Grant Program

The Green Business Grant Program, jointly administered by the City of Wheat Ridge and the Sustainable Wheat Ridge committee, offers targeted support to local businesses aiming to improve their environmental impact. Sustainable Wheat Ridge is a volunteer resident advisory group that partners with the city to advance community-wide sustainability initiatives. The grant program aims to catalyze upgrades in resource efficiency, waste reduction, and environmental stewardship within commercial operations located in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. This program is structured as a reimbursement-based opportunity, offering up to $1,000 per business per year, contingent on project-related expenses. It is designed as a matching grant, requiring the applicant to cover at least 50% of eligible costs. The funds can be used for a wide range of sustainability improvements, such as energy efficiency retrofits—including high-efficiency HVAC systems, boilers, and heat pumps—water conservation measures like installing high-efficiency toilets or xeriscaping, and waste reduction practices such as composting services or recyclable material purchases. Additionally, behavioral change initiatives, like discounts for customers who use reusable containers, are eligible under the program. However, the grant does not cover general operating or staffing expenses. Eligibility is limited to for-profit, independently owned local businesses with a physical presence in Wheat Ridge and located within commercially or industrially zoned properties. Home-based businesses and franchises are explicitly excluded. Both property owners and tenants with appropriate lease authority may apply. All applicants must be in good standing with the City—free of code violations or delinquent tax filings—and must maintain a valid business license. Registration with the Colorado Green Business Network is also required. The program follows a rolling application process, open annually until allocated funds are depleted. There is no fixed application deadline, allowing applicants to apply as long as resources remain available. Upon approval, recipients are required to sign a Letter of Commitment prior to project initiation. They must also submit a W-9 and ACH form before receiving any reimbursement. Reimbursement is contingent upon submission of purchase documentation and project completion proof within 30 days after finishing the project. The standard project completion window is four months from acceptance, with the possibility for extensions upon request. Projects funded through this grant must comply with all city permitting and building code requirements, necessitating consultation with the Wheat Ridge Community Development Department.
