Eligible applicants include individuals with a single-PD/PI NIEHS-supported R01-equivalent grant, active for at least four years. Institutions eligible to apply include public and private higher education institutions, nonprofit organizations, for-profit entities, and various state, local, and tribal governments. However, foreign organizations and multi-PD/PI applications are not allowed. The award aims to support the majority of the researcher’s independent research program. NIEHS intends to commit $4 million in fiscal year 2026 to fund 4-5 awards. The application budget is limited to $600,000 in direct costs per year, with a possibility to increase up to $750,000 for researchers consolidating multiple existing projects.
