The New Jersey Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission is offering mini-grants to support public commemoration of Dr. King’s life, legacy, and values through events held on or around Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, which falls on January 19, 2026. This initiative seeks to engage community organizations, educational institutions, and local governments in honoring Dr. King’s impact by funding meaningful, participatory programming. The mini-grants are designed to foster civic engagement, reflection on civil rights, and community building, with an emphasis on inclusive and creative approaches to observance.
Programs eligible for funding include a wide range of activities such as community clean-ups, arts and archival presentations, civil rights roundtables, film screenings, interviews with civil rights veterans, and sports events. The grant amounts vary based on program scope: up to $1,000 for local initiatives, $2,500 for regional efforts, and $5,000 for statewide activities. Priority consideration will be given to proposals that also commemorate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence or highlight New Jersey’s role in the founding of the United States.
To apply, organizations must submit a three-page application including a two-page narrative and a one-page budget. The narrative must describe the event, date (no later than February 17, 2026), location, lead organization, contacts, expected audience, outcomes, and any partnering entities. Applicants must be registered in NJStart or submit a completed NJ Non-procurement W9 form to be considered for funding. Submissions are due no later than Monday, October 6, 2025, at 9:00 AM. The narrative and budget must be submitted by email, with registration via an online form as a prerequisite.
Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, community and faith-based groups, tribal entities, local education agencies, higher education institutions, charter schools, and local, county, or state government entities. Labor organizations and consortia of these eligible groups may also apply. Gifts and gift cards are not allowable budget items. Proposals must be clearly written and substantively complete to be reviewed.
Award notifications will be issued in early November 2025. Funds are expected to be disbursed by December 31, 2025, pending compliance with required forms and registration. All funded programs must be completed by February 17, 2026, and expenditures finalized by March 17, 2026. Grantees are required to submit a final report, including expenditures and photographs, by March 31, 2026. Events will be promoted on the Commission’s official website, and commemorative materials will be supplied to participating organizations.
