Grant Description

The City of Dublin, Ohio administers the Hotel/Motel Tax Grant program to support initiatives that enhance the visitor experience and stimulate tourism within the city. Established from a 6% tax levied on overnight stays in local hotels and motels, the fund is intended to be reinvested in community projects and events that improve the city's overall appeal. Dublin, home to nearly 20 lodging establishments, utilizes these tax revenues to fund events and improvements that attract tourists and foster community engagement. Each year, the Dublin City Council allocates at least $225,000 or 6.5% of the previous year’s actual hotel/motel tax revenue—whichever is greater—toward this grant initiative. The primary goal of the Hotel/Motel Tax Grant is to support programs and events that positively impact both residents and visitors. These may include beautification of public areas, improvements to Dublin’s historic district, cultural arts projects, special events, and other initiatives designed to enhance the city’s character. Special emphasis is placed on events that encourage overnight hotel stays, promote local businesses, attract media attention, and serve a broad segment of the community. Applications are typically accepted in the fall each year. Once submitted, city staff review applications for completeness and eligibility. The applications are then categorized into either community benefit events/projects or sports tournaments. The City’s Finance Committee evaluates the submissions in late fall and recommends award amounts, which are subject to approval by the Dublin City Council. Reimbursement of grant funds only occurs after a final report is submitted, no later than 90 days following the event. Extensions of up to 30 days may be granted upon request and approval. Eligibility is limited to federally recognized, tax-exempt nonprofit organizations such as those with 501(c)(3) status. The city emphasizes projects that yield community benefits, demonstrate thoughtful planning aligned with community values, and show evidence of diversified funding sources. For the 2025 grant cycle, all events and projects are treated as new, even if previously funded, allowing all applicants to plan for the 25% matching requirement that applies after three years of funding. This match requirement is intended to promote sustainable planning among recipients. Restrictions on funding include a prohibition on funding for individuals, for-profit ventures, political or lobbying activities, endowments, events requiring public road closures for races, and travel expenses outside Dublin. Projects must not duplicate funding requests for previously incurred budget deficits. Reimbursement is strictly limited to the items outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the City and each recipient organization. For updates or notification when the application period opens, interested parties should contact Management Analyst Emily Goliver at egoliver@dublin.oh.us or 614.410.4456. Applications are expected to open in late summer or early fall. While no specific application questions are published, the city prioritizes programs that support tourism, local business engagement, media exposure, and cost-efficiency through organizational collaboration.
