City of Dublin Hotel/Motel Tax Grant
This grant provides financial support to nonprofit organizations for projects and events that enhance tourism and community engagement in Dublin, Ohio.
The Hotel/Motel Tax Grant administered by the City of Dublin, Ohio, supports local organizations in enhancing the city’s appeal to both residents and visitors through community-focused events and programs. Funded through a 6% occupancy tax on overnight stays in local hotels and motels, the program reinvests collected revenue back into the community, with the aim of generating tourism and improving quality of life. Each year, the Dublin City Council allocates a budget for the grant program equal to the greater of $234,000 or 6.5% of the previous year’s hotel/motel tax revenue. The program is structured to support events, beautification efforts, and cultural initiatives that align with the city’s strategic goals. Applications are accepted annually during the fall. Following the application period, City staff first review each submission for completeness and eligibility. Eligible applications are then categorized into two groups: community benefit events/projects and sports tournaments. After the staff review, the Finance Committee evaluates all qualifying proposals and recommends award amounts, which are then submitted to the City Council for approval. Final grant allocations are not confirmed until they receive a City Council vote. To be eligible, applicants must be tax-exempt, not-for-profit organizations recognized under federal law, such as 501(c)(3) organizations. Grants may be awarded for a wide range of activities including, but not limited to, public beautification, historic district improvements, special events, cultural arts initiatives, and projects that enhance Dublin’s appeal to tourists. While the city welcomes creative proposals, it does not fund individual applicants, political or legislative advocacy efforts, travel outside of Dublin, for-profit ventures, prior budget deficits, endowments, or races requiring public road closures. Additional stipulations apply to organizations with a funding history: events that have been funded for three or more years must provide a 25% match for the grant amount awarded. However, for the 2025 cycle, all applicants are considered new and are exempt from the match requirement. Each awarded organization must also sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the City of Dublin outlining permissible expenditures and grant expectations. Reimbursement will only be processed upon submission of a final report within 90 days after the event; extensions of up to 30 days may be granted upon request. Priority consideration is given to projects that generate overnight hotel stays, support local businesses and attractions, produce media attention, reach diverse segments of the community, and demonstrate financial sustainability through diversified funding sources. The program also encourages cooperative event planning that maximizes community benefit while controlling costs. Applications are due by 4:00 p.m. on September 26.
