CNX Foundation Grant
This grant provides flexible funding to grassroots organizations in the Appalachian Basin that address critical community challenges such as food insecurity, health, and vocational training, with a focus on creating lasting, measurable improvements.
The CNX Foundation is a philanthropic initiative of CNX Resources Corporation, aiming to address overlooked challenges within urban and rural communities across the Appalachian Basin. With a pledge of $30 million in community investments through 2026, the Foundation seeks to foster long-term, sustainable returns for the region by focusing on grassroots organizations and initiatives that align with its Tangible, Impactful, Local philosophy. These values prioritize measurable community improvements, immediate and lasting impact, and geographic proximity within CNX’s operational footprint. The Foundation does not operate as a typical grantmaking entity simply disbursing funds. Instead, it actively engages with grantees to solve problems collaboratively and build community capacity. As of the end of 2023, the CNX Foundation has invested $15 million in 121 local initiatives, including those addressing food insecurity, children’s health, broadband access, water quality, recidivism, and opioid recovery. Additional focus areas include vocational training, veteran support, and domestic abuse awareness. The Foundation offers flexible funding with no published application deadlines or minimum/maximum amounts, and decisions are made internally by CNX leadership, including its Board and CEO. Notably, CNX’s CEO has redirected a portion of his annual compensation—$4 million between 2022 and 2024—to fund CNX Foundation programs. One notable initiative is the partnership with the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) to support career pathways for vulnerable populations, including veterans, domestic violence survivors, and the formerly incarcerated. CNX Foundation does not fund political causes, for-profit entities, public schools, personnel costs, recreational clubs, or scholarship programs. The geographic scope of funding is limited to communities within CNX’s operational region in the Appalachian Basin, specifically in southwestern Pennsylvania and neighboring areas. Grants are intended to support causes that may not typically receive traditional philanthropic attention and must demonstrate alignment with the Foundation’s mission of investing tangibly and locally to improve quality of life.
