United is the Way Grant Program
This funding initiative provides emergency financial support to Rhode Island-based nonprofits that are delivering essential services to vulnerable community members facing increased demand or funding challenges.
The “United is the Way” grant program is an initiative launched by United Way of Rhode Island (UWRI) to provide critical emergency funding to nonprofit organizations in the state. UWRI is a well-established philanthropic organization with a longstanding commitment to improving the lives of Rhode Islanders by supporting local nonprofits that deliver essential services. The "United is the Way" program was created in response to growing uncertainty surrounding federal and state funding and the resulting impact on social service organizations. Its goal is to ensure the continued delivery of vital services—such as food, housing, safety, healthcare, and emergency relief—to marginalized and vulnerable populations. The funding available through this initiative consists of one-time emergency grants, with eligible organizations able to request up to $50,000. Most grants awarded are expected to fall between $25,000 and $30,000. These funds are offered as general operating support and can be used flexibly by recipient organizations to address increased demand, loss or delay of funding, or urgent operational needs. Notably, there is no required spending deadline for the awarded funds. However, grantees will be required to submit a report within a 12 to 15-month timeframe to describe the outcomes and impacts made possible by the funding. The program prioritizes Rhode Island-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations or those with fiscal sponsorships. While new organizations can apply, preference is given to established groups already experiencing reductions, delays, or terminations of government funding, or those facing significantly increased service demands. Applicants must submit supporting documentation to verify their funding losses or increased need, such as evidence of grant cancellations or funding freezes. Required application materials include the organization’s IRS determination letter, current budget, documentation of government funding levels, and other relevant supporting documents. A video link may also be submitted, though videos cannot be uploaded directly. The application process is hosted through the dedicated portal at https://unitedisthewayri.org/. While applications are currently closed for the remainder of the current fiscal year, they are scheduled to reopen in July 2026. Applicants are encouraged to register for technical assistance through the Alliance for Nonprofit Impact or participate in office hours and information sessions that are made available during the application cycle. These sessions cover application guidance, technical assistance, and funding priorities, helping applicants strengthen their proposals. Applications are reviewed by a selection committee composed of United Way staff and volunteers. The review process is guided by a published rubric, and applicants may receive follow-up communications after submission if additional information is needed. Current UWRI grantee partners may also apply, though they are encouraged to coordinate with their program officers if their needs exceed upcoming grant payments. For further information, applicants can reach out to Roshni Darnal for eligibility and program-related questions at [email protected], and Ruth Saah for technical support at [email protected]. With an emphasis on responsiveness and flexibility, the “United is the Way” grant program reflects United Way’s commitment to protecting essential community services in uncertain times.
