Grant Description

The Bergen County Utilities Authority (BCUA) is offering its Annual Recycling Challenge Grant Program with the primary objective of promoting recycling awareness in schools throughout Bergen County, New Jersey. This grant program is aligned with the BCUA's mission to enhance waste management and environmental sustainability within the county by fostering responsible recycling practices from a young age. The initiative aims to create a lasting impact on waste diversion and environmental education. The target beneficiaries of this program are all public and private elementary and high schools located in Bergen County. The grant seeks to either support existing functioning recycling programs within these schools or provide the necessary funding for schools to implement new recycling programs. The ultimate impact goal is to cultivate a strong recycling culture among students and the broader school community, leading to increased participation in recycling and a reduction in waste sent to landfills. The program prioritizes long-term projects with a significant educational component. Short-term activities like assemblies or field trips are not considered primary goals, though they can supplement a program. Applicants must provide a brief lesson plan as part of their application, emphasizing the educational focus. This ensures that the grant funding translates into sustained learning and behavioral change rather than one-off events. Expected outcomes include the establishment or enhancement of effective recycling programs in participating schools, increased recycling rates, and a heightened awareness of environmental stewardship among students. Measurable results will likely involve tracking the number of schools implementing or improving recycling programs, the volume of materials recycled, and potentially the reach of educational initiatives within schools. The BCUA's strategic priority is clearly to invest in community-level environmental education, with a theory of change that posits that by educating and empowering young people, long-term positive environmental behaviors will be fostered.
