Volunteer Fire Assistance Grants
This program provides financial assistance to rural fire departments with populations of 10,000 or less for training and essential equipment to improve fire prevention and response efforts.
The Volunteer Fire Assistance (VFA) Program aims to provide federal financial, technical, and other assistance to state foresters for organizing, training, and equipping fire departments in rural areas and communities to prevent and suppress fires. Eligible communities must have a population of 10,000 or less. The funding requires a 50-50 match by non-federal dollars. Eligibility is determined based on community population, NIMS compliance, and the department being volunteer-based. Preferences are given to applications for personal protective gear, communications, water handling equipment, and training. Vehicle and high-value equipment purchases are not funded due to limited funds. Purchases before the VFA application date are ineligible for reimbursement.
