Fred Baldwin Memorial Foundation Grant Program
This funding opportunity provides financial support to nonprofit organizations that serve the residents and environment of Maui County, Hawaii, focusing on impactful projects in human services, education, arts, and environmental conservation.
The Fred Baldwin Memorial Foundation offers funding to nonprofit organizations operating in Maui County, Hawaii. Managed through the Hawaiʻi Community Foundation’s (HCF) grant portal, the Foundation provides support for initiatives that uplift and benefit local communities, with a distinct focus on projects that reflect the values and philanthropic spirit of its founders, Emily Alexander Baldwin and Henry Perrine Baldwin. Established in memory of their son, Fred Baldwin, the Foundation has a long-standing legacy dating back to the early 20th century. After initially supporting a care home for the elderly, the Foundation shifted its resources post-1940s to broader community support in Maui County. Today, its trustees—all descendants of the Baldwin family—continue to champion efforts that enrich lives and preserve the unique heritage and environment of the region. The Foundation's primary funding focus encompasses a diverse range of community-serving sectors. These include human services, housing, and health organizations that provide critical safety nets, as well as educational and youth-focused programs that enhance learning environments. Additionally, arts and culture projects—including performances, exhibits, and facilities—are eligible, alongside environmental conservation efforts and historical preservation initiatives. Each funding round is structured to make a meaningful impact through modest grants, typically averaging $5,000, with the intent of amplifying outcomes where funding can be most transformative. Though capital campaign requests are not prioritized, exceptions may be considered under certain conditions. Eligibility for funding is open to 501(c)(3) public charities or projects that operate under the fiscal sponsorship of such entities. While most types of public charities are eligible, those classified as Type III non-functionally integrated supporting organizations are excluded. Applicants must have a physical presence in or serve communities within Maui County. Organizations may only hold one active grant at a time and are limited to one grant per twelve-month period. The Foundation discourages dependency on its funds for ongoing support but welcomes repeat applications in successive years. Ineligible uses of funds include loans, debt service, endowments, funds for re-granting, scholarships, and activities already completed. Applications are submitted online through the HCF Grants Portal. Prospective applicants must register an account and complete an organizational profile, which must be certified every six months. The application itself consists of multiple sections: a program overview outlining title, duration, demographics served, and alignment with the HCF CHANGE framework; detailed narratives about the problem being addressed, program activities, anticipated results, and budget strategy; and a section for supporting documents including the IRS determination letter and, if applicable, fiscal sponsorship documents. A final report is required before a grantee can be considered for additional funding. For 2026, there are two application cycles. The first deadline is February 2, 2026, with funding decisions announced in late April for projects beginning May 1 and running through April 30 of the following year. The second deadline is August 3, 2026, with notifications in late October and project periods spanning November 1 to October 31. Applicants are strongly encouraged not to wait until the final day to submit due to potential technical issues. Applications must be complete and submitted by the deadline to be considered. For questions regarding the grant opportunity, applicants may contact Maggie Pulver, Program Officer at HCF, via email at [email protected] or by phone at (808) 566-5590. Technical support for the application portal is available through a dedicated support ticket system on the HCF website. Helpful resources such as how-to videos and an Applicant User Guide are also provided online to assist with the application process.
