Redwood Research Grant
This grant provides funding for research projects focused on the biology and ecology of coast redwood and giant sequoia forests, particularly those led by nonprofit organizations and Indigenous communities, to support conservation and restoration efforts.
The Save the Redwoods League invites researchers to apply for the 2025–2026 Redwood Research Grant Program, which funds applied, hypothesis-driven studies on the biology and ecology of coast redwood and giant sequoia forests. Designed to support conservation and restoration science, this annual grant opportunity seeks proposals that enhance understanding of redwood ecosystems and contribute directly to the League’s mission of protecting these iconic forests amid environmental change. This grant opportunity is open to nonprofit 501(c) organizations—including universities, public agencies, and nonprofit research institutions—as well as federally or state-recognized Indigenous, Native, and Tribal nations and communities. Projects must serve educational or charitable purposes. The League especially encourages Indigenous-led projects and research applicable to its current and future conservation work. Grants range from $30,000 to $50,000. While matching funds are not required, they are strongly encouraged. The League does not cover indirect costs such as administrative overhead, rent, or insurance. Only allowable costs and non-cancelable obligations listed in the finalized Grant Agreement Form will be eligible for reimbursement. All successful applicants must accept the League’s standard Grant Agreement without modifications, and the agreement must be finalized no later than July of the following year. Applicants must first submit a pre-proposal using the League’s designated two-page template (excluding references). This pre-proposal must include how the requested funds would serve as catalyst or startup support and aid in future funding efforts. It should be submitted as a single PDF that includes the pre-proposal and CVs for all principal investigators, sent via email to Science@SaveTheRedwoods.org no later than midnight PST on October 10, 2025. Selected applicants will be notified by October 17, 2025, and invited to submit a full proposal, which will be due by November 14, 2025. Final funding decisions will be communicated by the end of December 2025, and funds will become available in early spring 2026. Proposals must align with the League’s conservation priorities, and past grant recipients must be in good standing with all prior reporting obligations to be eligible. Researchers are encouraged to contact Laura Lalemand, Senior Scientist, at Science@SaveTheRedwoods.org for questions or to explore alignment between their project and the League’s mission. Detailed instructions and the required templates are available on the Save the Redwoods League’s official website.
