2025 James Arnold Fund

The James Arnold Fund, managed by the SouthCoast Community Foundation, is currently accepting applications for its 2025 funding cycle. The grant program supports nonprofit organizations in New Bedford and its nearby towns that serve historically marginalized or excluded populations. The application window opens on March 13, 2025, and closes on April 26, 2025. Grants of up to $5,000 are available, and applications are evaluated by both the SouthCoast Community Foundation and the James Arnold Fund Advisors. Originally established in 1891 through the estate of James Arnold, the fund was created with the intent of aiding the “poor and needy of New Bedford who may be deserving.” While its original mission remains intact, the fund’s scope has evolved to reflect current social challenges. Today, the fund prioritizes support for nonprofits serving recent immigrants, families facing food insecurity, and educational programs that focus on New Bedford youth. Applicants must be recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations and must serve the New Bedford area. Organizations located outside New Bedford may also apply, provided they serve the city or its immediate surrounding communities. Grants are not available to individuals or for-profit entities and must be used solely for charitable purposes. All applicants are required to submit their proposals through the SouthCoast Community Foundation’s Online Grants Portal. Applications will be reviewed thoroughly by both the Foundation’s internal team and the James Arnold Fund Advisors. Final grant decisions will be communicated via electronic notification within approximately two months following the application deadline.
