ASEAN–Korea Young Scholar Research Grant
This grant provides financial support for graduate students from ASEAN countries and Korea to conduct research on ASEAN studies and relations, fostering academic collaboration and emerging scholarship in the region.
The ASEAN–Korea Young Scholar Research Grant is an annual initiative that fosters academic collaboration between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Timor-Leste, and the Republic of Korea. The program is designed to strengthen the field of ASEAN and Southeast Asian studies while deepening understanding of ASEAN–Korea relations. It is managed as part of the ASEAN–Korea Partnership framework and seeks to cultivate emerging scholars through field-based research, mentoring, and networking opportunities. By engaging graduate students in comparative, thematic, and regionally relevant studies, the program contributes to developing future leaders in regional studies and policy dialogue. Each year, the program selects twelve graduate students—one from each ASEAN Member State including Timor-Leste and one from Korea. Eligible applicants must be citizens of these countries and enrolled in accredited Master’s or Doctoral programs in their respective home nations. The grant provides financial support for fieldwork lasting at least three months in any ASEAN country or Korea other than the applicant’s country of origin. Research must focus on ASEAN studies, ASEAN–Korea relations, or themes consistent with ASEAN cooperation priorities such as sustainable development, gender equality, peacebuilding, digital and cyber security, or environmental issues. Recipients are awarded up to USD 1,000 in round-trip airfare and a stipend of USD 1,300 per month for up to three months to support travel, accommodation, and field expenses. Longer research stays are permitted but will not receive additional funding. Selected scholars are required to affiliate with a host university or research institute in their field site, where they will receive academic supervision and logistical assistance. They must submit both mid-term and final reports and acknowledge the grant in future publications. Applications are assessed on research clarity, methodological rigor, the necessity of fieldwork, and applicants’ prior academic or professional experience. Proficiency in relevant languages and the demonstrated ability to contribute to ASEAN–Korea academic dialogue are key factors. Successful applicants will also participate in the ASEAN–Korea Young Scholar Workshop to present their findings and engage with peers across the region. The 2025 application deadline is October 26 2025, with fieldwork to be completed by April 2026. The competition recurs annually, with similar cycles expected each fall. Interested applicants must submit materials through the ASEAN–Korea Programme website at https://www.akpgm.org/programs-1. The grant offers both academic prestige and professional exposure, equipping young researchers to contribute to Southeast Asian regional scholarship and international cooperation.
