Grant Description

The American Youth Services Grant Program is administered by the Community Foundation of Mendocino County and aims to sustain the legacy of the American Youth Services nonprofit, which concluded operations in 2022. This program supports the foundation’s mission to encourage youth development and environmental stewardship among underserved populations in Mendocino County, California. Grants are disbursed twice annually—in spring and fall—and are open to qualifying nonprofit organizations, schools, tribal communities, and faith-based entities. This grant opportunity focuses on initiatives that promote personal enrichment and spiritual exploration for disadvantaged youth and young adults through immersive group experiences in the natural environment. It prioritizes exposure to the unique ecosystems of Mendocino County and encourages deeper environmental awareness and connection. Projects may also extend beyond the county to allow youth to engage with natural and cultural settings in other regions, provided the objectives align with the fund’s mission. Organizations eligible for funding must either be headquartered in Mendocino County or demonstrate that all grant funds will be expended within the county. Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) public charities, school districts, federally recognized Tribes, special districts (e.g., community services or fire protection), and fiscally sponsored community groups. These groups must have at least one full fiscal year of operations and must comply with non-discrimination policies. Fiscal sponsors must share the mission of the community group and are required to have a Memorandum of Understanding outlining administrative responsibilities and fiscal control. Grant amounts range from $1,000 to $7,500. Awards may not be used for political purposes, direct individual benefit (such as scholarships), or pre-awarded purchases or activities. The Foundation does not typically fund event sponsorships or federated fundraising efforts. Applications are submitted online through the Foundation’s portal and are due by 5:00 PM on April 1, 2026. Applicants are advised to apply at least five days early to mitigate potential technical issues. All submissions undergo a competitive review process conducted by an advisory group with ties to the Mendocino Christian Camp and the Mendocino Presbyterian Church. The final funding decisions are made by the Community Foundation’s Board of Directors. Notifications regarding grant decisions are expected by April 15, 2026. Successful applicants should complete their projects and submit final reports by April 30, 2027. Participation in site visits or recognition events may also be requested. Program inquiries should be directed to Meredith DeLucia, Director of Programs & Scholarships, at [email protected] or (707) 468-9882 ext. 103. Technical assistance regarding the application system may be obtained by contacting Taylor Denham, Scholarship & Program Officer, at [email protected] or (707) 468-9882 ext. 105. Additional information and access to the application portal are available on the Community Foundation of Mendocino County’s official website.
