GAR Foundation Grants for Nonprofits in Ohio

The GAR Foundation provides grants to nonprofits that contribute to making Akron, Ohio, a stronger and more vibrant community. To qualify for a grant, organizations must be recognized as 501(c)(3) nonprofits or have a fiscal sponsor, and their work must specifically benefit residents of Akron. Applicants must also ensure their projects align with GAR’s strategic priorities. GAR Foundation funds a range of areas, including Early Childhood through Higher Education, Economic, Workforce, & Community Development, Arts & Culture, and Basic Needs. However, certain activities are not eligible for funding, such as special events, nonprofit anniversaries, medical research, and national or religious organizations. For organizations applying for the first time or those that have not received a grant recently, the process begins with submitting a Letter of Inquiry (LOI). This allows GAR staff to determine if the proposed project aligns with their priorities. LOIs are reviewed regularly, and applicants are notified within a few weeks. The LOI and full application are submitted through GAR’s online application system, which includes an Eligibility Quiz to start the process. Returning applicants who have received a recent grant from GAR do not need to submit an LOI but can log directly into the application system to begin the process. Applicants are required to include a completed Organization Budget Template, and arts and culture organizations must also submit an Arts & Culture Form that provides details about their audience.
