GAR Foundation Grants
This grant provides financial support to nonprofit organizations that enhance the community and quality of life for residents in Akron, Ohio, across various sectors such as education, economic development, arts, and basic needs.
The GAR Foundation offers grant funding to nonprofit organizations that aim to strengthen the Akron, Ohio community through efforts in education, economic and workforce development, community development, arts and culture, and the provision of basic human needs. The foundation prioritizes organizations that are aligned with these focus areas and demonstrate the ability to create lasting, measurable impact in the Akron region. To qualify, applicants must be 501(c)(3) nonprofits or organizations with an eligible fiscal sponsor. Projects must directly benefit Akron residents. GAR does not fund individuals, national organizations, medical research, religious organizations, nonprofit anniversaries, or special events, as these areas fall outside its strategic funding priorities. The application process for new applicants begins with a Letter of Inquiry (LOI), which helps GAR assess alignment with their priorities. LOIs are reviewed on a rolling basis. If the LOI is approved, applicants are invited to submit a full proposal by the applicable deadline. Returning applicants who have received recent funding are not required to submit an LOI and may proceed directly to the application phase. There are two annual grant cycles. For the current cycle, the LOI deadline is November 3, 2025, and the full application deadline is December 5, 2025. Applications are reviewed and discussed in the foundation’s May 2026 board meeting. For the previous cycle, the LOI deadline was July 7, 2025, the application deadline was August 1, 2025, and decisions were made in November 2025. Applicants use GAR’s online application system to begin the process by taking an eligibility quiz. Downloadable templates for budgets and specific guidance for arts organizations are also available. Through this process, GAR seeks to support collaborative, cross-sector efforts that foster resilience and opportunity in Akron’s neighborhoods.
