The Society of Family Planning has announced the 2025 Contraceptive Misinformation and Disinformation grant opportunity to support empirical research that investigates the origins, scope, and consequences of misinformation and disinformation surrounding contraception in the United States. The intent is to generate findings that can inform strategic interventions, practices, and policy responses in a rapidly evolving health information ecosystem.
Applicants are invited to submit proposals focused on key areas including: improving surveillance of misinformation and disinformation (especially on understudied platforms and non-textual formats), understanding the psychological and sociological effects of exposure, and examining the roles of emotion, identity, and cognition in susceptibility. Research must be anchored in established frameworks of misinformation and disinformation and should prioritize enduring relevance to ensure utility amidst evolving digital and policy landscapes.
Grants of up to $150,000 are available for research projects that can be completed within 24 months. The Society plans to fund up to five large projects (up to $150,000 each) and up to four smaller projects (around $75,000 each). Funding will also cover the processing fees for two open-access publications, provided they are published within two years of project completion.
Applications are limited to U.S.-based, tax-exempt organizations. While Society membership is not required, teams must include a named principal investigator and be attentive to equity-informed principles in design and implementation. Proposals that center the lived experiences and expertise of Black and Indigenous researchers and researchers of color are prioritized.
The proposal deadline is July 7, 2025, at 8:59 PM PT / 11:59 PM ET, with awards expected to be announced in late August 2025. Funded projects may begin immediately upon award notification. All submissions must be submitted through the Society’s online portal and formatted as a single PDF.
Each application must include an online form, a 250-word project summary, a detailed proposal narrative (8–10 pages), a budget and narrative, biosketches or resumes (10-page max per team member), and proof of tax-exempt status. Proposals will be reviewed based on relevance, methods, impact, equity, team positionality and expertise, and budget feasibility.
