Nonprofit Arts Recovery Grant
This grant provides financial support to nonprofit arts organizations in Western North Carolina that have been impacted by Hurricane Helene, helping them recover and sustain their operations and programming.
The ArtsAVL Nonprofit Arts Recovery Grant is a targeted recovery initiative designed to support nonprofit arts organizations in Western North Carolina that have been physically and/or economically affected by Hurricane Helene. Administered by ArtsAVL with financial backing from the North Carolina Community Foundation’s Disaster Relief Fund and Dogwood Health Trust, this program addresses ongoing challenges in the region’s arts sector following the hurricane. Recognizing that recovery from natural disasters is not a short-term endeavor, this program is structured as a two-year initiative, with the first funding cycle occurring in 2026 and a second round planned for March 2027. This grant program offers flexible funding aimed at helping arts organizations stabilize their operations, maintain or restore access to arts and cultural programming, and recover from storm-related damages. Grants ranging from $2,500 to $20,000 are available based on demonstrated financial need, recovery readiness, and strategic alignment with the program’s objectives. Eligible use of funds includes staff and artist salaries, rehiring personnel, rent and utilities, restoration of damaged spaces, replacement of lost materials, and marketing efforts to address tourism declines. To qualify, applicants must be nonprofit arts organizations legally incorporated as 501(c)(3) entities by September 27, 2024, with a minimum of two consecutive years in operation prior to the April 6, 2026 application deadline. Organizations must have incurred substantial storm-related impact and possess prior-year operating expenses of at least $20,000. Additionally, eligible applicants must be located in one of sixteen specified North Carolina counties: Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, Cleveland, Haywood, Henderson, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Transylvania, Watauga, or Yancey. Organizations affiliated with churches, municipalities, school systems, or universities are not eligible, nor are applicants intending to use funds for subgranting. The application process involves two stages. First, ArtsAVL staff conduct a preliminary review to confirm eligibility, operational history, financial documentation, and feasibility of the proposed recovery plan. Only complete and eligible applications advance to the second stage, which involves a panel of independent reviewers with experience in the arts and nonprofit sectors. These reviewers assess applications based on six criteria: physical and economic storm impact, role in the arts ecosystem, strength of recovery plan, organizational viability, community arts access, and support for staff and artists. Scores are assigned using a 5-point scale and used to determine award recommendations. Key program deadlines include an application open date of March 9, 2026, and a final submission deadline of April 6, 2026, at 11:59 PM. Award announcements will follow in late May, with funds distributed in early June. All funds must be expended by December 31, 2026, and a final report is due by January 31, 2027. Selected applicants will be required to sign a grant agreement and submit payment details and tax documentation (W-9). Applicants can expect to receive feedback with their award notifications, including a summary of panel scores and reviewer comments. Although funding is not guaranteed, the process aims to equitably assess organizations of all sizes based on the documented impacts of Hurricane Helene and their recovery readiness. For additional information or support during the application process, inquiries can be directed to Rebecca Lynch at [email protected]. Phone inquiries are not accepted.
