Grant Description

The Shakespeare in American Communities: Apprenticeships program, administered by Arts Midwest with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), supports early-career theater administrators and technicians through paid apprenticeship opportunities. These grants aim to build capacity within nonprofit theater organizations while nurturing the professional development of emerging talent in theater operations and production. Arts Midwest, a nonprofit regional arts organization, has facilitated national and regional cultural initiatives with the support of the NEA, enhancing arts access and capacity across the U.S. This initiative specifically targets 501(c)(3) nonprofit theater companies with a minimum of two years of experience conducting community-based, cross-sector theater programming. While the program is named under the broader “Shakespeare in American Communities” banner, eligible programming does not need to focus on Shakespearean content. Instead, it must demonstrate a commitment to engaging communities through theater, including but not limited to work in hospitals, senior centers, or underserved populations. Grants range from $20,000 to $30,000 and require a nonfederal one-to-one cash cost-share. These funds must be used to support paid apprenticeships lasting a minimum of six months during the performance period of August 1, 2026 through July 31, 2027. Eligible expenses include stipends, benefits, onboarding costs, and professional development, whereas food, fundraising, prizes, and unrelated administrative costs are prohibited. Apprentices must hold roles such as technicians, designers, operations, or marketing personnel, but not actors, writers, or development staff. Each awarded organization is expected to send a representative (not the apprentice) to a mandatory in-person convening at the end of the cycle, with travel costs covered by Arts Midwest. The application process begins with a mandatory Intent to Apply, due January 29, 2026, followed by a full application deadline on February 12, 2026. Applicants must register and submit their materials through SmartSimple, an online portal. Required materials include organizational and contact details, project timeline, summaries of the apprenticeship and community programming, a detailed budget, and narrative sections addressing the mentorship plan, goals, and expected outcomes. Applications will be reviewed by a panel in April 2026, with award decisions communicated by May 2026 and public announcements in June 2026. A final report will be required within 30 days of project completion. Only one application per organization is permitted, and applicants must choose between the Apprenticeship, Schools, or Juvenile Justice grant tracks. The program recurs annually, supporting a consistent cycle of emerging theater professionals and fostering sustainable arts leadership across the country.
