SFFILM Rainin Grant Program
This grant provides funding to independent filmmakers creating feature-length narrative films that address social justice issues, with a focus on benefiting the Bay Area filmmaking community.
The SFFILM Rainin Grant is a leading funding initiative in the United States for independent narrative feature films that explore themes of social justice. This prestigious program is a collaborative effort between SFFILM, a San Francisco-based nonprofit committed to supporting the cinematic arts, and the Kenneth Rainin Foundation, known for its dedication to the arts and education. Since its inception in 2009, the program has supported over 100 projects that center on human and civil rights, discrimination, gender and disability issues, and other contemporary social topics. Films funded by the program have premiered at renowned festivals such as Sundance, Cannes, and Tribeca, with many achieving critical acclaim and commercial success. The primary aim of the SFFILM Rainin Grant is to uplift and amplify voices that spotlight societal inequalities while also benefiting the Bay Area filmmaking ecosystem. The program awards grants in three categories—screenwriting, development, and post-production—with each category supporting a different phase in the filmmaking process. These grants are valued at up to $25,000 and come with various benefits, including access to FilmHouse, a collaborative workspace in San Francisco that offers opportunities for mentorship, networking, and skill development. For screenwriting and development recipients, a four-week residency at FilmHouse is a required component, providing immersive engagement with the local creative community. Applicants are evaluated based on the social impact of their stories, their professional qualifications, and their potential contribution to the Bay Area film scene. The program encourages projects that address the distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges in society through compelling plotlines, themes, characters, or settings. It prioritizes narrative fiction films with budgets of $3 million or less and does not fund documentaries, shorts, or work-for-hire projects. Projects must feature strong social value and demonstrate progress if they are resubmissions from previous years. The grant has a two-phase deadline structure: a Regular Deadline on May 8, 2026, with a $30 fee, and a Final Deadline on May 22, 2026, with a $50 fee. The application portal opens on February 10, 2026. Approximately 25 finalists are notified by late September, and final recipients are announced in late October 2026. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and actively involved in the screenwriting, development, or post-production phase at the time of application. They must also serve as a key creative on the project, such as a screenwriter, director, or producer. The application process is conducted through the SFFILM Grant Platform. Applicants must submit a logline, synopsis, artistic statement, and responses to prompts about the film’s social relevance and ties to the Bay Area. Work samples, a budget top sheet (for development and post-production), and optional materials such as lookbooks or previous work samples are also accepted. Finalists must submit additional materials including treatments, expanded script samples, and full budgets depending on the grant category. SFFILM members have their application fees waived. While not restricted to Bay Area residents or stories, all applicants are encouraged to outline how they will engage with the Bay Area film community. For more information or technical assistance, applicants can contact SFFILM at [email protected]. The program does not provide additional stipends for travel or accommodation, though awarded funds may be allocated to cover such expenses. The residency experience, which includes industry mentorship, peer engagement, and workspace access, is structured to foster deep professional development. The SFFILM Rainin Grant stands as a beacon for independent filmmakers committed to storytelling with social impact, offering not only financial support but also a rich community of practice.
