Virginia Humanities VA250 Grant Program
This grant provides funding to nonprofits, educational institutions, and local governments for projects that commemorate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, promoting public engagement and historical reflection.
The Virginia Humanities VA250 Grant Program is funded by the VA250 Commission and is designed to support projects commemorating the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution. This initiative encourages applicants to develop proposals that reflect the historical significance and legacy of the Revolution. Grants are managed as subawards through the University of Virginia, and successful proposals must align with the commemorative goals of the VA250 Commission. Eligible applicants for the VA250 Grant Program include nonprofits with 501(c)(3) designation, institutions of higher education, other IRS-designated nonprofit organizations, municipalities, units of government, and state or federally recognized tribal nations. Entities identifying as tribes without recognition are only eligible through a partnership with an incorporated nonprofit fiscal sponsor. Local VA250 Committees and their partners are also encouraged to apply, and coordination with these committees is recommended. Applicants can request up to $10,000 in funding, with a required 1:1 cost match. This match may be met through either cash contributions or in-kind support such as volunteer time or use of facilities. Grant recipients must use official VA250 branding and submit a final report detailing project outcomes, participant numbers, and program evaluation metrics. Only one VA250 project can be pursued at a time, and completion of any current project is required before a new application is submitted. The types of projects eligible for funding include public forums, community history initiatives, academic conferences with public access, educational curriculum resources, physical or digital exhibits, interpretive performances, teacher institutes, media production, and planning or research with a public audience. Travel expenses for project personnel and production of print materials such as brochures or maps are also supported. However, the grant cannot be used for political advocacy, indirect costs, international travel, awards, construction, or alcohol. Applications for the current cycle are due by 11:59 PM on June 16, 2025. Funding decisions are expected by mid-July 2025. Funded projects must take place between August 1, 2025, and September 1, 2026. Applicants must submit their proposals through the Virginia Humanities grant portal, where accounts can be created or accessed for application submission. For questions or additional information, applicants can contact Virginia Humanities at (434) 924-3296 or via email at info@VirginiaHumanities.org. The organization is located at 946 Grady Ave. Ste. 100, Charlottesville, VA 22903.
