Grant Description

The Land, Health, Community-Chicago (LHC-C) Program is a funding initiative designed to support holistic community health in the Chicago area. Administered by a private foundation, this program focuses on creating environments where residents have equitable access to life-sustaining resources without facing systemic barriers. Emphasis is placed on empowering communities, especially those historically affected by unjust policies, to reach their full potential through support that spans food access, environmental engagement, and mental wellness. LHC-C seeks to fund projects that encourage physical activity, healthy eating, and overall well-being within communities. The program particularly values proposals that offer children opportunities to engage with nature and care for the environment, address youth mental health from a community or multigenerational perspective, increase access to sustainably produced food, or promote grassroots food justice. In this cycle, both project-based and special funding streams are available. Special funding categories include Community Garden Grants and Inspiration Grants. Community Garden Grants provide up to $5,000 per garden for small-scale green spaces that connect community members with nature, emphasizing minimal food production rather than large-scale farming. Inspiration Grants offer up to $10,000 for collaborative, equity-focused initiatives aligned with the programโ€™s restorative goals. Eligibility is prioritized for organizations located within the City of Chicago, though those near the city limits that serve Chicago residents or economically marginalized communities are also considered. Organizations with annual budgets under $500,000, and leadership reflective of the communities they serve, are eligible to apply for general operating grants. After two consecutive years of receiving general operating support, they may apply for a three-year multi-year grant. Larger organizations (budgets of $500,000 or more) may seek project-based funding and may be considered for multi-year support after consistent alignment and funding over three years. The LHC-C Program accepts Letters of Inquiry from August 22 to September 26, 2025. Selected organizations will be invited to submit full applications by October 13, 2025, with a final submission deadline of October 31, 2025. Grant awards will be announced on November 24, 2025. The application process may include a site visit, either in-person or remote, as scheduled by Foundation staff. The program does not support individuals or event sponsorships. While the foundation does not specify a maximum request limit outside the two special grant types, typical awards range from $2,500 to $50,000, with an average grant size of $20,000. The program does not require matching funds. Interested applicants are encouraged to reach out to the Foundation for guidance or to discuss ideas before submitting a proposal.
