Community Micro-Grant Program

The Forge AHEAD Center has launched its Community Micro-Grant Program to support local organizations in Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi that aim to improve health outcomes related to diabetes, obesity, and hypertension. This initiative is a part of the Center’s broader mission to build equitable health solutions through strong community-academic-public health partnerships. Administered by the Community Engagement Core (CEC), the program prioritizes community-driven health projects and emphasizes sustainable, collaborative, and innovative approaches to addressing chronic health issues in the Deep South. The primary objective of the Community Micro-Grant Program is to empower grassroots organizations already embedded in communities disproportionately affected by chronic diseases. By offering financial support of up to $10,000, the program helps these organizations expand their reach, implement effective health education and prevention programs, and improve access to healthcare services. It is based on the belief that effective, long-term health solutions are best developed and implemented by those who live and work within the communities they serve. Eligible applicants must be 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations based in Alabama, Louisiana, or Mississippi. Projects should align with the program's focus on improving outcomes for diabetes, obesity, and hypertension, particularly in underserved areas. Proposals will be evaluated on criteria including feasibility, innovation, collaboration, and sustainability. An essential feature of the program is the involvement of the Forge AHEAD Community Advisory Board (CAB), which ensures that the funded projects are responsive to community needs. The application process began with the release of the Request for Proposals (RFP) on February 19, 2025. Interested organizations must submit their applications by April 18, 2025. Grant recipients will be announced on May 19, 2025, with projects starting on July 1, 2025, and concluding by June 30, 2026. Throughout the funding period, grantees will participate in monthly support meetings and a mid-year check-in and are required to submit a final impact report at the end of the grant term. The micro-grant program offers a structured yet supportive process for community organizations to receive funding and build capacity. While specific application questions and formats are available through the RFP on the Forge AHEAD website, the program offers resources and continued engagement throughout the grant cycle. This ensures that funded initiatives not only launch successfully but also contribute meaningfully to lasting health improvements in their communities.
