Multifamily Recycling Grant Program
This funding opportunity provides financial support to local governments, recycling businesses, nonprofits, multifamily property owners, public housing authorities, and colleges for developing or improving recycling programs in multifamily residences across North Carolina.
The Multifamily Recycling Grant Program, offered by the Division of Environmental Assistance and Customer Service (DEACS) in North Carolina, aims to initiate or expand multifamily recycling programs statewide. This initiative aligns with a broader mission to enhance environmental stewardship by increasing access to recycling services and the recovery of recyclable materials from multifamily residences. It supports the state's strategic priorities for waste reduction and resource management by providing crucial funding for necessary infrastructure and operational costs. The program targets a diverse range of beneficiaries, including local governments, recycling businesses or non-profits, multifamily property owners or management companies, public housing authorities, and colleges and universities for off-campus housing. The primary impact goal is to create new access to recycling for multifamily residents and/or significantly increase the tonnage of materials recovered from these properties. By supporting a wide array of entities, the program seeks to foster a comprehensive and inclusive approach to expanding recycling infrastructure across North Carolina. The program's priorities and focuses are clearly defined. It emphasizes projects that establish new recycling access or boost recovered tonnage. Grant funds are specifically allocated for equipment purchases such as carts, dumpsters, collection vehicles, concrete pads, and recycling corrals, as well as educational materials. Additionally, funding can cover positions or labor for program management and implementation. A key focus is on collecting traditional household recyclables, including mixed paper, cardboard, steel and aluminum cans, glass bottles and jars, and plastic bottles, tubs, jugs, and jars, ensuring a broad impact on the waste stream. Expected outcomes include a measurable increase in recycling participation and material diversion from landfills within multifamily residences. Grant recipients are required to collect all or most traditional household recyclables, contributing directly to state-level recycling targets. The program anticipates that by providing financial support and encouraging local investment through cash match requirements (10% for public entities and 20% for private), it will lead to sustainable recycling programs that continue to operate beyond the grant period, fostering long-term environmental benefits and resource conservation.
