RurAL CAP Foundation Grant
This grant provides financial support to nonprofit organizations and government entities in rural Alaska for projects that promote education, cultural preservation, and community sustainability for low-income individuals.
The RurAL CAP Foundation offers targeted grant support for nonprofit and governmental organizations that serve low-income populations and rural communities in Alaska. Established to enhance community resilience and individual opportunity, the Foundation supports educational and charitable initiatives that align with its core mission. Typical grant awards range from $500 to $25,000, with most falling between $2,500 and $10,000, although larger requests may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Projects must originate from or benefit rural Alaska and demonstrate a clear alignment with the Foundation's goals. The Foundation prioritizes initiatives that empower low-income individuals through training and education, preserve cultural traditions and subsistence practices, and build leadership capacity in rural settings. Examples of previously funded projects include youth-focused skill-building events like music camps, intergenerational learning opportunities such as elder-led subsistence activities, and community infrastructure projects like gardens or recycling centers. Support is commonly awarded for supplies and transportation costs, while funds are generally not granted for stipends to volunteers or for purchasing equipment that has limited benefit. Additionally, the Foundation does not fund individual scholarships, employee salaries, overhead or indirect costs, or unhealthy food items. To apply, organizations must complete the RurAL CAP Foundation application form, provide a copy of their IRS determination letter (for nonprofits), and submit a one- to two-page proposal letter. This letter must include key details such as organizational background, project description, community benefit, itemized budget, and identification of additional funding or in-kind contributions. Applicants must also designate a responsible party for the project and indicate who will document the effort through photos and a final report. A signed letter from an authorized representative is required to validate the submission. Applications may be submitted via the Foundation's website, email, fax, or postal mail. Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis but are reviewed during the Foundation's regular grant cycles, which close on April 30, August 31, and November 30. Applicants are typically notified of decisions within one month following each deadline. Awards are disbursed approximately 30 days after the respective cycle closes. Importantly, funding will not be provided retroactively for events or projects that occur prior to the expected award date. To remain eligible for future grants, awardees must complete their funded project within 12 months and submit a final report. Organizations currently holding an open grant or who received funding within the past year are not eligible to apply until those conditions are met. For time-sensitive projects or additional guidance, applicants are encouraged to contact Foundation staff. All inquiries and application submissions may be directed to [email protected], or by mail to the RurAL CAP Foundation at 731 East 8th Ave, Anchorage, Alaska.
