Historic Preservation Grant Program
This program provides funding to nonprofit organizations in Linn County for projects that preserve historic artifacts, structures, and educational programs related to local history.
The Historic Preservation Grant Program, administered by the Linn County Historic Preservation Commission, supports nonprofit organizations undertaking projects to preserve and interpret the history of Linn County, Iowa. This grant is targeted specifically at nonprofits located within Linn County that meet formal eligibility criteria. The program is structured to foster preservation of historical structures, collections, and knowledge dissemination related to the area’s cultural heritage. The purpose of the grant is to support projects aligned with one of three categories: artifact or collection preservation, building or structural restoration, and interpretive programs. Eligible projects under artifact preservation include collecting and maintaining historical materials or conducting research such as National Register of Historic Places nominations. Projects that involve structure work receive priority if the property is on or eligible for the National Register, and such applications must include a Property Condition Worksheet and photographs. Interpretive programs eligible for funding include public lectures, historical publications, community events, or any activities aimed at enhancing public understanding of Linn County’s history. Funding cannot be used to purchase buildings or physical structures. The grant program has a total funding pool of $28,800, with typical awards being under $5,000, although there is no strict limit. All funds must be used for expenses not yet incurred and cannot be applied to costs that arise before funding announcements are made. Only one project may be submitted per application; if multiple projects are submitted in one proposal, the entire application is rendered ineligible. Additionally, projects that receive funds from the Linn County Witwer Trust grant program for the same purpose are not eligible under this program. The application period for the FY27 grant cycle opened on January 29, 2026, and will close at 5 p.m. on March 27, 2026. Submissions must be made through the online portal and comply with the detailed application instructions. Applicants must be in good standing with any prior historic preservation grants from Linn County and may not be a current Historic Preservation Commissioner or be represented by one in their application. To assist applicants, the Commission is hosting two briefings: one in-person session on February 18, 2026, and one virtual session on February 28, 2026. These briefings provide applicants an opportunity to ask questions about project scope, eligibility, and the application process. Attendance is optional but encouraged. Applicants can contact Brad Wylam at [email protected] or call 319-892-5151 for more information on joining the sessions. Applications will be reviewed by the Commission on April 29, 2026, with funding announcements expected by June 11, 2026. Approved projects may begin on July 6, 2026, and must be completed, with all final reports submitted, by March 12, 2027. An optional presentation opportunity is available to applicants on April 15, 2026, and any appeals must be submitted by May 28, 2026. The program is non-recurring and must be applied for during the designated annual cycle.
