Grant Description

The William J. & Margery S. Barrett Fund for Adams, Cheshire & Savoy Public Service Award is an annual recognition program established to honor individuals who have demonstrated exceptional dedication and contribution to the communities of Adams, Cheshire, and Savoy, Massachusetts. This initiative is a part of the Fund for Adams, Cheshire and Savoy, which was founded in 1995 by Margery Barrett under the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation. The Fund supports projects and awards that enrich the quality of life for local residents. The Public Service Award was launched in 2000 to commemorate Margery Barrett’s legacy of generosity and civic involvement. Margery Barrett was a lifelong resident of Adams, Massachusetts, where she was deeply engaged in education, community service, and the arts. Alongside her late husband William Barrett, she also had a passion for photography and served in leadership roles in various photographic societies. Her philanthropic contributions exceeded $3 million and have had a lasting impact on the local area. The award recognizes individuals—whether through paid employment or volunteer work—who have gone above and beyond in serving their communities. It specifically honors those who have made significant contributions that enhance the economic, educational, civic, cultural, or social vitality of Adams, Cheshire, or Savoy. Nominations are encouraged from the general public, nonprofit staff or board members, public agencies, and community organizations. Self-nominations are also accepted. Nominees should embody a generous spirit and a strong commitment to community service. The award places particular emphasis on leadership, innovation, and the impact of the nominee’s efforts. Selection is conducted by the Margery and William Barrett Award Committee, composed of community members who are active in local affairs. Final approval of the awardee is made by the Fund for Adams, Cheshire & Savoy Committee. The recipient of the award will designate a nonprofit organization to receive a $1,000 cash grant in their name. While the award is not a personal cash prize, it reflects recognition of the individual’s community impact through charitable contribution. Applications for the 2025 award are due by October 15, 2025. All nominations must be submitted through the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation’s online application portal.
